The missus wants this done because she is worried about furniture getting scratched.

It's cruel and unnecessary. You can train them not to do it by picking them up when they start and taking them to a scratching post. They soon learn. Ours now only scratch outside.

Our bastard cats have annihilated the house like. Clawed the fuck out of everything, sofas, beds, carpets. You can't ever have anything nice, and owt new you buy will look like absolute shit within a week.

I can't wait for the little fuckers to die, but they are only nine, so if I'm unlucky I'm only halfway through my sentence.

This is a very American thing and it's extremely cruel for the cat as it involves amputation of the bone not just the claw. If you have a cat already don't do it. If you haven't got a cat - please don't get one if your Mrs is remotely houseproud. There are such things as nail covers but I've no idea how effective they are and they probably fall off due to wear and tear.

It's getting substantially less common over here as people understand what it actually entails. It would be like removing a dog's teeth because a dog occasionally chews on things: train the behavior, not the physical ability to engage in the behavior!
