No more concerts at SOL

Millions of pounds lost from the city from people stopping in hotels and spending money in the area. Now the Mags have taken them up it is backward thinking and another thing Sunderland has lost out on. It is one of the worst decisions the club has made in recent years stopping them. The ground is our biggest asset it made sense to use it in the close season and they obviously did have a positive financial impact on the club as theve pulled forward season ticket payments to cover the lost revenue people have swallowed club propaganda too easily.

No idea how much truth in the pre-season game, but if the hierarchy agreed to any such demand - it is absolute stupidity

The first game at home is definitely a load of bollocks. Man City started last season at home, for example - after numerous concerts at the Etihad during pre-season. Arsenal regularly start at home aswell.

Youd have to buy into the presumption they lost money first......i simply dont believe it.
 
Shame that the city will lose the extra income as a result of putting on the concerts...but must admit the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the SOL was one of the worst gigs I've ever been to.
 
The concerts never were risk free for the clubs and there is a reason why Newcastle often knocked back the opportunity to host them. There is a potential for loss if the terms aren't right. The below is from the Newcastle fans forum about why the club are hosting concerts again.

"SW enquired about the return of concerts to St. James’ Park following the announcement of Ed Sheeran’s scheduled performance in June 2018. The club explained that previous opportunities had not been desirable from a commercial perspective, however this concert was structured differently and presented the club with a risk-free income opportunity. The club outlined its recent and forthcoming rugby fixtures and explained that it is always open to securing events that will create new revenue streams. "

I was told they were making £250k profit per gig. Now that doesn't seem worth the hassle when weighed off against Dour Daves demands IMHO.

But surely if they did make money then we would still do them?

Why wouldn't they? Just to host one match at home?

The club made quite a bit of a fuss about the kudos of hosting them.

Did that profit come after the wages of Gary the Hair? What about the wages of other staff that were primarily employed because of the gigs? If not, then that profit would be wiped out by the wages (which Martin Bain has now saved the club from paying).

This seems to be the key to it. The council were putting money into them because of the contribution to the economy within the City, but once they pulled the plug it made the gigs far less financially viable. The reality of it is that the club should only have been interested in the gigs that were sure fire sell outs with potential for 2nd nights i.e. the ginger fella that is doing 3 nights at the Mags ground, or the likes of Coldplay, Foo's, Bruce etc.
