Benitez Future In Doubt Over Failure to Secure Key Signings

If you sell you have to replace. Not to is idiotic. If you sell for 50m in an ideal world all clubs would want to spend that money. Do you not want to spend all the Pickford money? Would you settle for 500k being spent on someone like Al-Habsi like? I wouldnt. You use that money to strengthen the team. Rafa strengthened for the championship. He would be foolish to spunk lots of money on untested players and keep us lumbered in the championship.

al habsi would be adequate back up for mannone in 'the championship'

They were your players, yeah. You didn't sell them, did you? Where was tiote for example?

They were out on loan (with the exception of Tiote who seemingly wasn't interested in playing for us) for whatever reason. Therefore weren't members of our squad.

Maybe we should spend 6m on someone like Sels as back up. That's what a world class manager would do.

Was highly rated in belgium. Wasnt bought as a back up it just didnt work. It was a punt like you did with Mignolet.

For what its worth I dont think the lad was given a fair go. I hope he returns stronger from loan.

You never answered the question with regards to spending. Wouldnt you rather your club put back in what was taken out?

not to the tune of 50m to get out of 'the championship' - no chance. a WC operator shouldn't need a wallet that big when shopping in lidl

The question that remains for me is this.
They are of the opinion that Rafa would have kept them up if he'd a little more time. Maybe he would who knows.
But if, for example, Nigel Pearson or any other manager like him had matched the results, result for result, would they have said the same and would there have been the clamour to keep them. I'm not so sure

Not a chance in hell.

If Grayson had £50m available to spend would you be so vehemently against him doing it? After all, he is 'shopping in lidl' too?

Don't see the arguments here like - they were well on the way to relegation before Benitez came in - if he had been appointed in June 2016 and got them up for this season it would be job done. So what they would have hounded other managers out if they hadn't saved them like rafael Benitez - arguably proves Ashley has the measure of the cartoon army and knows he will sell his tickets and pies while they have a 'big name' at the helm.

Ive got no real interest in trying to wind up Mags. Benitez is clearly (or has been over his career at least) a very, very good manager. Its not in doubt.

At the Mags hes done okay. He probably should have kept them up (failure to beat any of the sides around him is very poor) but can't be held fully accountable.

He done decent getting them up but it is probably par - if he hadn't have got them up, it would have rightly been considered a failure, due to the circumstances surrounding; they spent a lot and for all the "net spend" was fine the gross spend is an awful lot for the Premiership never mind the championship. Not criticising him for doing so mind.

The test will be how they do in the Premiership. For what it's worth I reckon they'll be fine; nothing amazing but will stay up comfortably and have a reasonable season. Benitez maybes isn't as good as he used to be, but he is savvy enough for that and his counter-punch style will be better in a league where more teams will attack at St James.

I also think (fear) Benitez will be the man who might give them a chance of success in the cup. He is very much a CV manager; he likes to get achievements to put on his CV and values cups big time. I do worry he will do it with them.

I think the biggest compliment i can give to Benitez is that although I'm confident he will keep them up this year, if he does leave I wouldn't expect another manager to keep them up as i think it is generally a weak squad.

Or you could just reply, I wasn't being arsey, I think it's a reasonable question.

You seem to ask this question very often, deliberately or not choosing a volatile, controversial manager (normally, if not always, Nigel Pearson).

Forgive me for thinking you're being 'arsey' but every bit of negative news about Newcastle United is littered with daft responses from almost Mag the lines of you'll burst or you'll wee yourself, etc.

You don't come across as the most objectionable but I'll humour you anyway:

A sizeable chunk of the reasoning why I (I can't speak for anyone else) have took to Benitez is because he's very likeable (in massive contrast to Pearson, Pardew,McClaren, Kinnear and Carver).

He seems to want the best for the club, never dumbs down our expectations in a negative way (unlike Alan 'I hope we can match Morecambe' Pardew) and brings a positive energy to the club. Fuck knows we need it under the other administration.

Hasn't there been a thread or two on here praising Simon Grayson for how he has spoken about 'only wanting players who want to play for the club'? North East football (Newcastle in particular prior to Moyes rocking up at your place) has been dogged by negative characters who play down our expectations and have zero ambition.

Benitez's and now Grayson's comments are a breath of fresh air and show understanding of the size of the respective clubs they are at.

That's the difference which Nigel Pearson (with his abrasive personality) would not have given.

EDIT - Alas, you (and others) have already made your judgement of my response in a previous post.
