Benitez Future In Doubt Over Failure to Secure Key Signings

Think what the lad meant was that if Benitez had came in two games earlier, had more time to work with the squad, not if the season had carried on to 40 games. We got beat 5-0 at Chelsea, then had almost 3 weeks til our next game, that would've been the time to sack McClaren and bring in Benitez before the Stoke and Bournemouth games, and that's where the possibly the extra points would've came from, as he'd have had an extra month working with the squad. Clearly he was doing something right as we finished the season 6 unbeaten.

Anyway it's a redundant discussion isn't it really, it is what it is. Promotion secured at the first attempt and we look forward to August.
The real problem here is perception.

Having ditched managers regularly the mackems think that extricating yourself from relegation is always achievable. The reality is it isn't.

Technically they are correct, we went down under Benitez. People are probably right when they claim that a slightly earlier appointment might have avoided relegation. It doesn't really matter, it happened, and he got on with it.

I'm guessing that wages had a lot to do with it but he made short work of getting shot of the players who let the fans down. He used the money he raised to have an almost new squad and got them up at the first attempt. There were one or two rank displays, but there were also some decent ones. Prior to the Brighton(a), Huddersfield(a), Reading(a) I recall seeing plenty on here lipping their lips as the idea of promotion going tits up. Three pressure games, three excellent results.

The result on the final day probably reinforced my perception of him. He's not only a decent manager, he's also a lucky one.

He's the best we've had since Robson and it would be a disaster if he walked away. With the right financial support and given time he could build a side capable of being on the fringe of a European spot rather than a one constantly flirting with relegation.

Anyone from either club who says they wouldn't want him as manager are only kidding themselves.

Doesn't count once you've already been relegated man! Win as many games as you like one you have "R" next to your name, it doesn't make a f***ing difference.
Ok then, 10 points from 9 games including 3 games against the bottom 3....but no, you are right he is a legend

Where have I said that?

I loved them going down, as i work in the toon, and the hysteria, gloating, arrogance and self entitled smugness i had to face was torture
Especially after cabayes fluffed penalty handed them a win v palace, the chronicle pullouts etc were so cocky

With a talented squad with some easy games to play, benitez made mistakes

Insisting on playing cisse up top whe he was long past his best, surely mitrovic had earned a go?

Not getting a tune out of the worlds best c mid in shelvey...

Negative set up v a woeful villa

And he has made mistakes last season too, with a lot of crap signings, not finishing off a lot of crap teams, getting knocked out both cups v easy opponents

And still the sad fuckers chomp away, this is quality, they're all chomping, even the deluded wingate twat has crawled from under his rock.

Why do the mags worship failures? A special bunch indeed.
