He

Left

A bomb

On a train

Thanks for spelling that out. The thing is, sigh, there are two things required for any offence under English law to be complete. 1/ the mens rea roughly translated as the " guilty mind".
2/ the actus reus - actually doing the act.

If you've a mental illness it's probably not hard to argue that he couldn't have the mens rea. I don't know, there's no link. Not sticking up for him but in a week where, iirc, your posts have suggested a humanitarian and libertarian side, surprised you'd ignore mental illness as an alibi if it's genuine.

A smoke bomb.

Packed full of explosives and ball bearings. The only reason it didn't go off was because the timer failed

When his house was raided police found material revealing his fixation with guns and explosives.

Blank firing pistol and bb gun, knuckle duster and knife found at his home along with a list of components on how to make a bomb, he also posed next to the image of the man who allegedly masterminded the 2015 Paris attack.

Good to see all the neuro developmental experts on here putting autism in the same bracket as crazy, mental, daft etc. Thanks you utterly backwards idiots.

For anyone with a child or family member with high functioning autism (me included) this scares the shit out of them.

Many people on the spectrum fixate and become obsessed about things. For some it's Lego, mine craft, or gaming. For others it's trains or cars. For this lad it was terrorists and bombs. I don't think he is inherently evil or a mental case. It's just his condition pre disposed him to go down this path.

What he did was abhorrent, no excuses and he is being dealt with by the law in the most appropriate way it allows.

I can't justify it. No one can but I can understand how it happened. His mother must be in bits.

Sorry but this is shite. Yes its sad about Autism, but when Autism is causing kids/adults to make bombs which could kill people, hes a terrorist.

This is either poor parenting, social care at work or he isnt as Autistic as being made out and it was an attempt to make an excuse.

Clever enough to go to university. But on the basis of a one minute excerpt from what would have been a fairly lengthy and intense police interview, he's branded as a harmless kid. Listen to what he's saying. He intended to leave that item on the train. He knew there would be consequences of what he was doing. Having autism does not automatically absolve him of his actions nor does it excuse him of them.
I'm not a psychologist that specializes in this sort of thing, but neither is anyone else on this board either. So maybe, having been privy to all the facts, including the pre sentence psychiatric reports, the judge was the best person to say what should happen to him?

It's quite offensive that you think someone "may not be as autistic as being made out"

For anyone who has been through the process of getting a diagnosis for their child they will tell you it can take years. It isn't just after one visit from a health worker.

I'll say it again. IT IS WRONG AND HE SHOULD BE LOCKED UP.

But people coming out with shite like there is on this thread is just wrong.

Autism doesn't "make" people build bombs. But his condition coupled with shitty social media and societies obsession with the war on terror led him down that path.

It could have easily been collecting coins.

I work with people who have PhD's and are clever as fuck. But struggle with conversation and social norms. Guess what, they are on the spectrum.

Since we are not allowed to be racist, homophobic and discriminate against physical disabilities, does that mean people with neurological problems are the new targets?

And your point is what exactly?

But it wasnt collecting coins it nearly killed civillian people.

If social media and the war on terror lead him down that path, where were the parents?

Probably acutely aware that their son had an obsession with guns and weapons. And hoping it was only that.
