Used to be a hosses and carts when I were a lad, and loads of monkeys blood.

I think half the Italian POWs from the local camp at Harperley must have stayed on after the war to make their fortune in the ice cream business.

The one I recall best was Taziolio

I like ice creamio
from Taziolio.
It goes down my Bellio
And out of my Holio,

As all the kids used to sing when he came around.

sadly, you don't see many nowadays, but what do you remember about your 'iceyman'? We had a few come round our street in the 70s and 80s. One I remember was an Italian bloke who worked for G. Fellas. If we were playing footy on the field, he'd park the van up and have a kick about with us. Unfortunately, for him at least, one of the lads sneaked off and discovered that the glass screen on the counter couldn't be locked. For weeks, one of us would sneak off during the game and rifle his gear- he didn't last long, canny player though.
still comes round our street got a 99 off him last week with sprinkles ,,Bove comes aswell

Lizzie Annes. She used to take bets before bookies were widespread/legal. She welshed on a bet with me da so he broke in one night and took goods to the value of his winnings.

Tommy Mac used to park half way up Forest Road anarl.

Lizzie Anne's van. Aye, that was it. Didn't she have a beard?

Saw an ice cream van the other week, down Picktree with a plate spelling out something like G FELLA (obviously not like that).
But the company wasn't Fella's.

I remember his old Sherpa (iirc) from days gone by when I'd be at me grandma's in Fencehouses. Me dad is originally from there and he remembers him, anarl.

Lusharooney there.

Dinnar mate, I was only a young 'un. She lived in a house opposite on the corner of Front Road/St Lukes. Lass got killed outside there in a hit and run about 10 years ago or so.

Used to go out with a bowl to buy ice cream for my nan in the 70s......scoop of ice cream in a glass with some sasp poured over it.

Couldnt afford to send a bairn out to an icey nowadays.
Joe geraldi and little tony on fellas.
