A Minchellas van used to come round Fellgate from as far back as I can remember. They used to be husband and wife that did the round but pretty sure the wife still comes round in the same van as 40 years ago. Used to see the van parked outside a house near Heworth metro as well but haven't checked its still there for a while.

We still have one, comes round every night at 7 , even in the middle of winter still heard him outside in the pitch black

We'd all be waiting for the Gillespie's van round my area in the old days. Favourite was a "black man", two scoops on a chocolate wafer  Never questioned it as a kid...

When you had nowt- the shame of having to take the pop bottles back to get the refund.

Jackie's ices in Birtley..

"Jackie's takes some lickin' " was the motto on the side of the van..

Unfortunately Jackie was a bloke..

Cannit remember if it was Fellas or Geraldis that was "often licked but never beaten"

Used to be Tony Fella who came round High Barnes in the 80s. Cider ice lollies.

And XL Beefy crisps.

My earliest memories of an ice cream are St Lukes Road in the early 70's. Bag of crisps and a rocket lolly was 5p.

Remember that van that parked at the top of what is now European Way? Shop on wheels.
