People should use the closing lane, then if they do go right to the wire, sit and wait to be let in. Otherwise, pootle down the closing lane, whilst making progress and then signal in plenty of time and/or find a gap. Or sit in the open lane at the earliest opportunity, if you want to cause yourself unnecessary delay.
No one is put out and the traffic flows as intended.

Some people make this sound hard.
Well, it's a choice. More often than not people will let people in from the open lane when taking the piss. Not me though ;)

No. I've always been advised to use both to limit disruption from longer queues. I'm unfortunate enough to spend time driving in Milton Keynes with all of its roundabouts and any sort of long queues that block a roundabout can clog the whole town up. Using both lanes as long as possible is a necessity.

"Merge-in-turn is seen by road operators as a benefit for queuing traffic at road works in that they use both (or more) lanes to queue and not just one, then at the 'pinch-point' they smoothly merge-in-turn.
So this also addresses another common gripe I read on PH in that when they say they notice drivers going down an empty lane when queuing traffic is all in lane 1. They are actually doing nothing wrong. "

From advice given by Highways Agency.
It wouldn't make any difference to traffic flow. There's still the same number of cars and when you hit the single lane shit slows down. It's people that go on the outside just to save some of their own time, not everyone's.

And onky one continues. The one you are not in.

Aye. So expect to have to stop at the end of your lane, if you have not had the common sense to vacate it in advance.
Doing so 800 yards beforehand or 100 yards, is down to what you consider sense.

I know who gets where they are going first, though.

I can guarantee she wouldn't have been saying "you're on my foot" if a van was parked on it. I had an industrial cooker plonked on my foot just behind the toecap and it f***ing knacks. Screaming wasn't even an option as the pain and panic took my breath away :D

She's a lunatic and was the guilty party due to her aggressiveness and spoilt bastard nature....

Anyone on here who thinks the van driver is in the wrong and she isn't wants their licence taken off them ffs.
I read the highway code cover to cover and not once did it say if someone doesn't let you in at a merge in turn, try and force your way in. I also can't find the bit that encourages you to fake accidents and demand police presence. It was 1989 when I took my test so things might have changed a bit since then.

Highway Code says use both lanes. Remember being told and taught that on my test. You're meant to got right to end and filter in to keep flow of traffic.

You're meant to is
Me neither. No one needs to take the piss. People just need to be aware and considerate.
Even when I take the piss, I try and merge in a good 30 yards before the cones. I normally put my best gormless face on and point at my sat nav to get sympathy :D

I always thought merge in turn meant you merge when it's your turn? Having let one car in already, I would then presume it wasn't the audi's turn to be given right of way by the van so she touches her breaks and goes in behind the van with the car behind giving right of way, that car then follows the audi and the next car in the right hand lane goes in behind? Am I wrong? Admittedly I don't drive like so could be miles away but as a passenger that is what I would expect to happen in those circumstances.

How many cars should the van allow in? If there were 4 cars bumper to bumper behind the audi, would the van be expected to sit and let them all in? One car merges, you follow on as the van attempted.

No. You should be looking to merge when it makes sense and is safe.
If a load of knackers are sitting in the inside lane and you have 600 yards to go in an open lane, at slow speeds, then you are stupid not to use it.
As long as you don't attempt to force your way in, you will be let in. By someone else who understands the highway code.
Agreed. The point of using both lanes is to reduce the length of the queue, speed the traffic flow and ease tempers.

The highway code was changed to specifically address the issue of polite drivers queuing for half a mile to a roadworks restriction and getting angry at the queue jumping idiots flying past and forcing their way in at the last minute.

'Use Both Lanes' signs were introduced to help educate the type of driver who last looked at the highway code when preparing for their driving test.

Wrong. Merge in turn at the end of the two lanes means creating only one choke point, wheras if people are looking to merge in numerous points earlier on then there are numerous points of interruption to the traffic flow. It isn't just about traffic flow dynamics though, there is also the fact that merge in turn is meant to prevent people getting all wound up - although that does require drivers not to be knobs at when they get to the merge point.

I think it still said to watch out for the fella in front waving the red flag when I last read it.

The highway code says Merge In Turn. What point of 'In Turn' do you have trouble understanding?
