Infuriating thing is that with both clubs' fanbase, both clubs history and both clubs' potential we could be. The infrastructure is all there, but a succession of poor choices in both boardrooms have one club in the Championship and one club odds-on to end up there.

One thing I would say, it seems a lot of Sunderland fans on here cannot understand why Newcastle fans would feel positive. We were relegated despite spending a lot of money, we've recently lost a record breaking run of derbies, and we're now in a league with minnows. It's simply that while we have had a shit time of it, the consensus is that relegation was the the nadir and we're on an upswing now. Just like every other football fan we begin a season with hope until it's crushed by our team. Sunderland fans were hopeful that Moyes would drag Allardyce's squad to safety, but a combination of failings in the transfer market and a disrupted pre-season means it's another hard season ahead.

The narrative that we're struggling in the Championship is a bit silly too; was the expectation on Wearside that it's a struggle if we don't win every game 4-0? We're top of the league, we're the top scorers in the Championship, no league team has won more games, we've got through our annual Christmas wobble and remain 7 points clear of 3rd, and have managed that without our integral midfielder. Benitez is a good coach and is building solid foundations, we're odds-on for the Championship title and even without significant strengthening I'd fancy us to finish above whichever teams come up with us plus 1 current Premier League team.
