Same here. I did it moving as a student, turned up in a new house only to find the place filthy. After all the hassle of packing and getting everything to where it needed to go we had to spend ages cleaning before we moved anything in.

Besides, last time I moved, when they shifted the draws and wardrobe out the bedroom, the amount of dust and fluff that had built up underneath was embarrassing. There was no way I was going to leave the room in that state without spending 10 minutes shoving the vacuum round.

Well, if I knew it was students moving in I might not have bothered remembering how I lived as a student! ;)

Students used to take the piss when I drove a taxi cab. At first we'd only charge them the metered + time spent loading and unloading. In most cases they were only moving a short distance for about a fiver. Then we changed the terms and it was up to the individual drivers what they would charge. They still saved a fortune, although we weren't insured to carry their stuff.

I used Harkers. They were very good. Price agreed upfront, 2 blokes came in and cracked on, non stop they were lifting and carrying everything out, didnt even want a cuppa when offered one.

My brother used these and said they were spot on. He went to the pub, had some dinner and a couple of pints, they gave him a ring when they were done, doddle.

I'm moving in about 4 weeks (hopefully) and will definitely be using these.

Any chance of a link?

Do you want me to breathe for you as well? If you are so interested then go to the website and go through the procedure to put a complaint on the website. You will be told that the business will review your complaint and have the right to withhold it.

Last lot I used complained that I hadn't told them when booking it was from 1st floor flat to a 1st floor flat.

My answer... You didn't ask!

Moving in about 4 weeks again and I am looking for a decent removal firm.

Last ones we had done nowt but moan about carrying stuff about despite their job basically being carrying stuff. They really started to take the huff when I told them I wouldn't be carrying owt and they had to do it themselves.

I will have shit loads to do on moving day so really can't be fucked with lugging boxes about.

Are you actually expected to help as I was under the impression that's what I was paying these for.

A big firm like Low Fell Removals wouldn't expect you to help but you pay a lot more for it. A smaller firm may give you the option to help to keep your costs down if they are charging an hourly rate, plus the more hands you can get to help the less "staff" the van man will have to bring.

I'm not so interested that I am going to put in a spurious complaint against one of their tradesmen to see if it affects their reputation, but I imagine there will be a mechanism in place to prevent malicious reviews getting onto the site/affecting ratings or whatever. I think if I were running a vetting site I would ask the tradesman concerned "what have you got to say about this bad review you have received?" to give him a chance to refute it legitimately to my satisfaction, and then take a decision on whether to accept the review or not.

After all, sites like Checked And Vetted stand or fall on their integrity and credibility.

The reason I pulled you up on this is that I have worked for companies in the past that have been badly affected by hearsay of malicious rumours and I take people up on it when I see negative comments being made anonymously without any backup. I did the same to someone on here a couple of years ago who had slagged off a prominent computer company in town. There was no backup to what this person had said about the firm, he just said "That's what I heard"..

Okay, what about this. I booked a builder to do some work. At first there were no problems, other than them asking for more money half way through, but you pretty much accept that. Then with less than a days work left to do, basically put up coving, fix a skirting board and then paint, the builder asked for the money for the job and said that he would see me on Monday to finish the job. That was two and a half years ago and I'm still waiting for him.

I attempted to put a comment on the checked and vetted site explaining all of this, in pretty much the same words as I used here, but I was told that the builder had the right to see the complaint first and refuse to have it attached to their advert. So basically checked and vetted means absolutely bugger all.

People should be able to place comments provided they can prove that person has worked for them. There should be no censorship. I ended up getting my brother in law to do the coving, then the painter fixed the skirting board and painted the room.

Nah we agreed a price in advance and they knew exactly what I had to move. It's their fault.

Fair do's. Lazy bastards.
Have just agreed to a firm moving my gear. £300. Seems cheap but everything is boxed up. No electricals, etc.

35 crates, 4 couches and that's it. Easy job.

Specifically said "I WILL NOT BE LIFTING A FINGER ON THE DAY. YOU MUST DO THIS JOB KNOWING IN ADVANCE THAT THE PRICE AGREED IS MOVING EVERY ITEM ON THE LIST TOO AND FROM BOTH ADDRESSES BY YOURSELF AND YOUR STAFF. NO REFRESHMENTS WILL BE PROVIDED ON THE DAY AND NO SMOKING WILL BE PERMITTED WITHIN 200 YARDS OF EITHER PREMISES OR OUR FURNITURE. IF THESE RULES ARE BROKEN WE WILL TAKE COURT ACTION AGAINST YOU AND NEGATIVE FEEDBACK WILL BE PLASTERED ALL OVER VARIOUS INTERNET SITES"

I agree, but would add " and that they have done an unsatisfactory job". If what you describe is correct, and tradesmen can refuse to allow the review, then that is obviously unsatisfactory. But I just can't see that being the case.

Original quote was £250, but they added on fifty quid twat tax.

No refreshments will be provided on the day
However if they do the job properly without moaning they will both get a litre of single malt and plenty food and drink on the day. You have to lay the land first and reward once a good job has been done. They'll have earned their coin and more if they do it without moaning.

Every time I have moved, I have made sure there was one box with tea bags, mugs, a pack of biscuits and the kettle. Even if you are paying for someone, it is basic politeness to give them a cuppa. They are probably more likely to take care of your stuff if they don't see you as being unfriendly and tight fisted.
