T20 Franchise Shite

This.

3/4 week block in the school holidays would sort it out. Every other successful T20 competition is played in its entirety in one block. Ours is a mess, one game a week for about two months or summit.
Exactly

Get it sorted in a matter of a month. It's a joke at the moment. Also, pretty sure the first 20/20 was played live on sky and then nothing for a week. Surely it would have made more sense to have four or five games over that weekend to get the interest going.

It's impossible for the avid cricket fan to follow, nevermind the casual fan - which is their target audience.

How on earth can they play a game of cricket at Wembley?

Every ball should go for 6

Do people suggesting a block not remember the crap crowds when this was done previously? Thursday and Friday nights bring in money, two games a week doesn't. If the made the current comp two divisions and got it out from behind the SKY paywall I think it would flourish.

aye this is what i don't understand, hailing this as some kind of game changer when it is what happened a few years back.

it is a better idea like but i'd sooner use it to bookend the season. a four day match is far more prone to be effected by weather than 90 minutes of swingball

The debate rumbles on over the future of the English domestic T20 competition.

In one corner, the counties seem reluctant to deviate from the T20 Blast. Essex CCC chief executive Derek Bowden argues: “The 18 counties are all making a profit out of T20, some more than others depending on how they do and how well they market it."

After a record-breaking summer of domestic attendances, it's difficult to argue against the fact that the existing model is funding our four-day cricket, the stepping-stone to Test cricket.

In the other corner, many current and former players are in support of an attractive franchise-based system following the success of the Indian Premier League and Australia's Big Bash. Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale hinted towards city-based franchises on Twitter. “Franchise system would work in England,” he said. “Ten cities, over a three-week period, straight after IPL. World’s best players, bigger crowds.”

So where do the management stand? The England and Wales Cricket Board says no final decision has been made. ECB chairman, Colin Graves, is reportedly set on introducing a city-based T20 series from 2017, with Sky understood to have offered to pay around £40m a year in broadcasting rights to see a revamped competition around eight city-based teams. The biggest hint yet was dropped earlier this year when Mike Fordham, one of the key players involved in developing both the IPL and the Caribbean Premier League, was recruited by the ECB, who tasked chief executive Tom Harrison to lead a root-and-branch review of English cricket.

The summer of 2017 is just 18 months away. If English franchise T20 cricket was to take shape quickly, here's our view on how these eight city-based operations could be structured:

There's not a chance in hell that I'd support 'Newcastle Magpies' and I'd imagine most of the Sunderland lads would feel the same. Whats up with the name Durham anyway? It's a city in it's own right.

I'd imagine Sheffield lads would have a bit of difficulty supporting a Leeds team and Liverpool supporting a Manchester team and Somerset and GLos supporting Cardiff? Nah, it cant happen like that, I suspect they'll go for non specific names such as 'The Jets', Yorkshire could be 'The Digins' and Lancs 'The Cloggers' (them last two were a joke like) but if they're going to give them a name they should try to pick one that avoids pissing off a section of supporters. A name for us that identifies as the North East would be good to find.

the pessimist in me said all along 'the newcastle magpies' is what they'd go with. maybe they nicked that off here.

as a durham lad living in teh south east for donkeys i can tell you nobody knows where durham is but everybody knows where newcastle is.

This would be an education for them then ;)

No, because there were too many games. What they need to do is have a 3/4 week block, two groups of 9, but only play each team once. So you have 4 home games and 4 away.

Then teams can market the hell out of their four home fixtures. It's much more concentrated so then people don't have to pick and choose which ties to go to when they could realistically go to all of them.

I'd also put a £10 maximum on tickets too, with kids for a quid offers - but that's unlikely.

Would the die hard lot drink twice as much better and burgers if there were half the games though...

Going off how low our attendances have been in the competition so far, I can't imagine the added number of games has contributed to beer and burger sales that much anyway.

Fill the ground as cheap as you can. 10,000 will naturally buy more pints and burgers than 3,000 - which we barely manage on good days.

dubious how much of that cash goes to the club though, mostly outside caters etc.

ticket money is vital. i sometimes wonder if running a bus service included in the price might help more, £15 quid and a shuttle from sudnerland interchange/durham bus station/newcastle somewhere etc

Just on those names again ...... none of those suggested by The Cricker really work, each will put a section of fans off so they'll go for something more generic as has been said elsewhere.

e.g. Western Warriors, North Easterners, Midland Mavericks and so on .....
