Ashley's not daft. He is a gambler though. He knows if they don't get up at the first attempt they're in massive trouble so he's throwing more money at it to try and make sure.

He also knows there'll be massive unrest if he doesn't keep Rafa, so really had not other option once the nayshun decided he was the new messiah.

It's rarely that straight forward though, they've got a team who turn up when they feel like it or when the pressure is off. For example they couldn't put in a performance away to Villa or Norwich, but could thrash Spurs at home when it no longer mattered. It's going to be fun if they lose the first few.
I was just thinking - imagine if Rafo was managing Norwich or Villa - would they be as cocksure of coming straight back up under him? Probably not - and yet Norwich were marginally better than the Mags last season. It's just classic Mag delusion. Amazing that all is forgiven with Ashley too

Agree with a lot if what you say bui how were Norwich better then the mags?

Didn't they beat them in one of those 'crucial' games? Maybe it was a draw, sorry.

that's cos they're on holiday marrow

I'm not saying they are a good side, they aren't, but Hull is a good comparison.

Seriously - there's a great chance they'll come straight back up but who knows? Maybe some other team will really click into gear and walk the league - squeezing the next five/six teams into scrabbling around for second place. Anything can happen tbh.

How many f***ing messiahs have they had

Mass hysteria in action.
Since the John Hall revolution they have had several messiahs to worship and to lead them to salvation, Shearer, Rafa and Keegan were the main ones.
Bobby Robson was different as it has only been in the subsequent years that history has been rewritten and legendary status has been retrospectively awarded. At the time he was deemed a failure and sacked for failing to deliver Champions League Football and the embarrassment of qualifying for an inferior European competition.
For whatever reason they need a figurehead, a leader, the similarities to North Korea are there for all to see.

'Raffa has inpresses me nonstop', sounds like a f***ing line from Full Metal Jacket
