Jermaine Defoe - Poorest signing in recent memory

Aye, was probably a little too ott in the way I put my initial point across

Not saying I'm right, I appreciate I was wrong and have said plenty.

As you say, behind the hyperbole of my initial posts I was at least making a valid point, albeit one many disagreed with. It's also a point many people bring up when we're in a bad run (was brought up last week iirc). I don't really agree with it now, to be honest, but it's not THAT unpopular a view.

Just most don't wrap it in tabloid-esque exaggeration :lol:

While not agreeing with him I could see the argument he was making it the time. It was more about not being able to fit Defoe into a system which was a fair point to make. However the last line was an all time classic:

"A genuinely, catastrophically awful signing, which we didn't need and didn't fit, which is the biggest shambles of the whole Congerton era of awfulness."

Yeah just did a week myself recently, some mag interloper reported me for offending their sensibility (yeah right). When I asked the mods why I had been banned they told me that they had no say over the banning and if I had a problem then I should send my complaint to the "owners" of the forum - any idea who these people are?????????? I haven't. But anyway fellow veteran welcome back

You were banned for being a sunderland supporter?

No, he felt I had "abused" him when I told him to fuck off and shouldn't even be on a SAFC forum (I also hinted what he should do in his spare time - that might have been the catalyst for the 1 week ban!) :) Never mind, he doesn't frequent our board anymore!

I wonder if the mods have a watch list for mags who grass as they are obliged to take action by Google Ads so ban people but just wait for the opportunity to get the grassing mags off the board, permanently.

Some 2015/16 stats, fellas.

Jermain Defoe - P29, G13
Jozy Altidore - P25, G13

The facts speak for themselves. I'm not looking for an apology, just that you all think twice when doubting me in the future.
You did forget to mention that Jozy is currently playing in a league which Sunderland Ladies would win if they were playing blindfolded with their legs tied together, but apart from that, as you say, facts is facts.

Indeed. We continue to play Fletcher as a target man when in reality we rarely knock crosses into the box, he's as soft as shite and he rarely holds the ball up. Why not change the dynamic and throw balls into space for Defoe to run on to?

Words of wisdom!

Yeah, it's a league full of aged has-beens looking for a last payday.

The first one - no. It was ott, like the title. He's been a bad signing though and represents the lack of clear thinking and planning at the club. That we (might) have found a way to work with him now doesn't change that it was a signing made without any thought, which was what a director of football was meant to be all about.

The second - yes. His career goal record is alright, nothing particularly special and he's rarely had a truly special season (I think there's one standout for Tottenham, maybes 09/10). And he is past that best. A good couple of games doesn't change that. He's always been a player who hits streaks and scores in clusters.

Still fighting for his cause in January

Defoe was far too good for that league

Did you read the rest of his post?

He's talking about Defoe as a signing, and that he was signed without any plan as to how we might accommodate him. It's a valid point. If we spent our entire summer transfer budget on Jesus Navas, it'd simultaneously be the case that Navas is our best player and Navas is a bad signing.

Based on his form since, he moved to the MLS about 3 years too early. Maybe he lost his mojo briefly, because you don't move to the MLS if you still think you can get 10+ a season in this league.
