whilst we know about the bombings that took place in London and Coventry etc, but were the docks of Sunderland targeted?? Even on the Tyne or tees were they?? I have never heard anything about it, I think there was once something on the news about Hartlepool being bombed.

Hartlepool was hit by jorman ships and hung a monkey. In retaliation.

Or something.

I know a bomb hit next to Roker Park and destroyed a wooden shed building outside the ground. Another hit the Victoria Hall.

My Grandpa told me Sunderland was targetted as the German pilots saw the Wear bridge and thought it was the Tyne bridge, so Newcastle wasn't hit as much as Sunderland.

My nanna has told me Sunderland got targeted, not sure how much tbh

I've got some photos off Facebook showing the Nazi bombing targets in Sunderland, I'll post them tomorrow.

Was that not something about the Heugh Battery?

My dad was in traction in hospital in Sunderland after being smashed to bits in an accident down the pit. He couldn't be moved down to the shelters & told me he used to lay there during air raids and hear bits of shrapnel skidding off the concrete roof.
