The Pelly

Central Defender
Any memories from this one, Portsmouth were heading for promotion, had won their last 5 games and we were heading for relegation. Somehow we absolutely battered them winning 4-1, they missed out on promotion and we stayed up...just. Would love to see some footage of the game. It was one of those games where you are just hoping the lads could do it and they did.

We were great and even Martin Gray scored.
Massive gang of their lads chasing a massive gang of our lads around the side streets then turning around and doing it the other way

Martin Gray was outstanding in that game and iirc, he got one of the goals.

Pompey had the whole RE and apparently, it had been a bit lively around Roker Ave area.

Clockstand paddocks for me, lovely spring day and the Pompey fans were in good voice. I swapped scarves with a Portsmouth fan after game for some reason as well. Guy whittingham on fire that season for them. Think he knicked a goal.

Fulwell End for me that day. Did they not have two players sent off? Still scored with 9 I think.
Correct, Guy Butters was sent off for deliberate handball. I remember my old man chatting to him outside the players entrance after the game, he commended on how loud the roar was every time a Sunderland player got on the ball. It should have been more than 4-1 to be fair

I remember the roker end packed full of Portsmouth fans. They got nasty when the 4th went in and tried to get on the pitch. I think some did.

Great win though and a massive surprise.

I vividly remember us beating Tranmere 3-0 at half time around the same time. We were playing class and we couldn't believe it. The place was bouncing and it was a really sunny day. Alas, this is Sunderland, the game ended up 3-2 with us clinging on for our dear lives at the end. Nowt's changed really. It's rarely f***ing easy.

Great day...sun was shining and we won 4-1.....kicked off down Roker Avenue before and after the game

Back of the Fulwell for me, it was loud as fuck, got covered in villa pop when we scored, it was sunny, Paul Walsh had a hissy fit. They should have gone up that season but the for that freak game.
I miss Roker.

One of my favourite games at Roker, I can recall loads of little things.

It was f***ing boiling and I was in the mainstand paddock, Roker wing right next to their lot. The first time I ever heard the "When I was young chant" .As mentioned by others, Portsmouth brought about 5000 up. But I think it's probably the poorest effort vocally by any large away turnout I have seen. Apart from a few pre match Play Up Pompeys, I didn't hear a peep.

Singing "Theres only one Billy Bunter" to one of their rather "full figured" supporters for ages. HE tried to laugh it off but you could tell he was seething.

The handball on the line and Paul Walsh hoying a tantrum. Andy Awford, who the press were bigging up at the time looking really poor. He spent most of the game with one hand on his hip and flicking his fringe from his eyes with the other.

After the match, loads of their lot offering people out at the car park next to the Mainstand. A Sunderland lad went over and went nose to nose with one of their lads at the front and called him a soft bastard. As an impressionable 16 year old, I thought it was the bravest and coolest thing I had ever seen.

Straight after that, 3 teenage lasses properly in the face of a Portsmouth supporter walking to his car. Blocking his way, gloating like fuck and screaming in his face. They were well out of order and if they were lads they couldn't have complained if he gave them a clip.

Was anderton playing for them that day, or had he signed for spurs

I can't remember him playing but he could well have done.

Did he not sign for Spurs after they were knocked out of the FA cup against Liverpool in 92?
