Craft Beer

I know I'm gonna get absolute pelters from the SMB for this. But I have to say that some of these American style craft beers are f***ing class

Granted, a bit more expensive, but they are very tasty

Have a Beavertown Neck Oil Session IPA on the go. Very canny
The ones I've had, I've enjoyed, very tasty indeed.

Do you have any actual evidence for that? This chap is quite a well known amateur beer historian and suggests that it's not the case, and that there was a hop recommendation as well as an attenuation recommendation, but nothing about strength.

"All we know from the evidence we do have is that Hodgson was one of the brewers exporting pale ale to India, and became the most famous. We can guess that Hodgson quite likely knew of the opinion expressed in books on brewing written in the 1760s that it was a good idea to highly hop ales for export to warmer climes. But there is no evidence at all that Hodgson was the one to discover this. Eventually that general knowledge about the need to hop beers for export to places like India apparently led to brewers to announce for sale something they called “Pale Ale prepared for the East and West India Climate” and similar designations, which was eventually shortened or summarised as “India Pale Ale”. The fact that Hodgson called its beer “East India Pale Ale” in 1835 means it was probably “prepared for the East India climate” and so more highly hopped: whether it was so prepared in 1793 we don’t know."

Canny drop this mind. Was in Southern Belgium a few years ago with work and found a pub near me hotel that had this on draft. Sat at the bar with a bloke from sales and we had about 8 each. I was fine sitting down but when I went to stand up I realised it was going to be a struggle to get back to the hotel.

The Beaverton Gamma Ray is a lursh drop. Peckham Brewery do some canny American Pales too.

But there's no evidence for that in the article you've posted. Everything I can find on the subject suggests that beers of that strength were just 'in' at the time.

You have to balance the strength though.

Porter is one way, the bitterness of the roast is one way, and hops are another.

Vital ipa by victory is very very enjoyable. As good as any I've tried. 6.5%, not a session drink -ideal for me because I don't often have more than 3 or 4 thesedays.
