Jermaine Defoe - Poorest signing in recent memory

Here are the games when he has been the only Sunderland player to score a goal:

Swansea 1-1 Sunderland
Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle
Sunderland 1-1 Swansea
Crystal Palace 0-1 Sunderland

That's a crucial 8 points he's earned us, not to mention goals in 2-0 wins at Burnley and Leicester.

One of our greatest recent signings.

This is a big sticking point to some of our fans, who just cannot get over it. Much like "weeeyy Gordon wuz like 9 million punnddds like marra hinny so shud be catchun everything".

You would think these fuckers are all chipping in for his wages from their pay cheque every month.

Yes, it's crazy wages for our club. But it's wages we have to pay at the moment to get players of the calibre of Defoe. We could have a few more 4 Danny Grahams/Altidores upfront if they would prefer, and they still wouldn't do half the work Defoe does, nevermind score anywhere near the amount of goals.
It's not our fault if you don't understand finances. Our high wages has been directly quoted as being restrictive to attracting players. Defoes high wages is a fair comment especially in years to come as being a risk.

The comparison with Gordon is ridiculous as well.

I understand wages fine, and I know how spending 2 peoples wages on him means we have 1 good player who can score us goals instead of say 2 players who could be more of the same shite we already have (given our recent transfers).

I don't think Defoes wages are the problem, it's the shite we have on our books that we cannot get rid of. They should be first to go in January to free up wages, not Defoe. Quality over quantity is what we need, and build on that. We have seen what it's like having a massive squad of shite.

And the comparison to Gordon is fine. It's about big money (wages or fee) that some of our fans cannot get over.

He quietly gets on with what we pay him to do----score goals.

Whether he starts or comes off the bench is irrelevant,he works, and with the class that made him one of the premiers most dangerous players in his prime, finds a way to put the ball in the net. Sheer tenacity got him his goal last night. Great goal Jermain, well done, you fully deserved it for not giving up.

All this palaver about finding out where to put him is rubbish. Simple, play 4-4-2---.Him and Fletch are working well together, and we now know we CAN play 4-4-2 and get results. Im invigorated, I foresee days when him and Fletch cause havoc at times now that our defence have shown they CAN cope with 4-4-2.

There's also the bonus that most Prem defences are set up to cope with the usual lone striker, 4-4-2 is unsettling for them

Great post.

His positional sense , runs and general awareness are so much better than any other forward we have had in recent times. He could have had a hat trick last night had PVA played it square to him instead of shooting.

I love the way he's sharp enough to exploit others mistakes. He's a tenacious little bugger, which is why that horrible incident with Gordon occurred. I think he'll be invaluable in helping Watmore to improve his game. He's another player who doesn't give up, and spots those mistakes others make.

Fluid between the two I think, even changing to 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-1-1/3-5-1-1 at times.
It completely confused Neville, and Carragher

They also seem to forget we were already paying half of it for Nogoals Jozy.

The problem posters have including myself over Defoe isn't necessarily his wages now, but more in the future and if his legs goes. In addition to being able to fit him in the team, which hopefully we have solved.

I never had any problems with Gordon fee. The sweeping generalisation isn't comparable.

Any signing can be a terrible move or a brilliant move depending on whether that player is what you need and he fits the team.

If we had bought him for £6m and paid him the same wages as Jozy the same poster would probably have called it a masterstroke.

So we get him on a free instead and pay him double the wages? Swings and roundabouts.

Defoe will cost us £13m over 3.5 years.
Rodwell will cost us £19m over 3 years.

And yet Defoe is our worst singing?

LOL

It's a mag mate......
Read the OP more carefully, and it is correct: "the Defoe signing is a disaster" ... for the mags!

Mint how he earned a point for us. Took the ball just past the circle, and finished with a nice shifty move to create the shot!

Who is the same poster?

Best finisher at the club since Bent, if all of our lads were as poor as him we would be top 8.

Says more about the standard of player we've had at the club than anything else mind. His finishing this season has been piss poor by his standards I think, I know he's scored goals but my lord has he missed some easy chances you'd expect someone like him to bury.
