He quietly gets on with what we pay him to do----score goals.
Whether he starts or comes off the bench is irrelevant,he works, and with the class that made him one of the premiers most dangerous players in his prime, finds a way to put the ball in the net. Sheer tenacity got him his goal last night. Great goal Jermain, well done, you fully deserved it for not giving up.
All this palaver about finding out where to put him is rubbish. Simple, play 4-4-2---.Him and Fletch are working well together, and we now know we CAN play 4-4-2 and get results. Im invigorated, I foresee days when him and Fletch cause havoc at times now that our defence have shown they CAN cope with 4-4-2.
There's also the bonus that most Prem defences are set up to cope with the usual lone striker, 4-4-2 is unsettling for them
He's a much better footballer than I'd given him credit for before he came here.
Give overControversial view, but his signing has been a disaster.
Not so much as a player: despite being four years past his (pretty average) best, he's still our best goalscorer and an alright player.
But he turned Poyet's grinding, but solid, team into a complete shambles as Gus fannied about trying to find a way to accommodate him in the side. Convinced if he hadn't signed, we would have ground out a dull survival, Poyet would still be manager and we'd be moving on with a actual philosophy and at least trying to play good football.
Even after Poyet, Advocaat was at a complete loss how to us him, and now Allardyce his.
He's on unspeakable wages, until he's about 63, and three managers in a row have basically admitted there's no way to fit him into our side.
A genuinely, catastrophically awful signing, which we didn't need and didn't fit, which is the biggest shambles of the whole Congerton era of awfulness.
is this one of those bump threads where we all ridicule a genuine opinion of a poster with the benefit of 20:20 hindsight?
To say Defoe was "the poorest signing in recent memory" was always a bit silly considering our transfer record.is this one of those bump threads where we all ridicule a genuine opinion of a poster with the benefit of 20:20 hindsight?

He was almost a fullback for us in that vital win at Everton when he scored a goal off his arse, when he missed last night I predicted he would get another chance and score, that's what he does, could you say that about Jozy or Danny I would suggest not. When you re-read the OP it wasn't a very good argument, especially considering some of our other recent purchases.
E.g.

No mention of the important goals that he's scored, his workrate when often on the left wing, or that he is in fact a very decent footballer despite his age.
Except we played 5-3-2 last night not 4-4-2. I agree with the two up front part though.
I thought it was 3-5-2!
Fluid between the two I think, even changing to 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-1-1/3-5-1-1 at times.
Nope. It's ridiculing a poster who hasn't got a f***ing clue. Defoe is a fantastic signing and someone who would/will get us goals. Anyone who knows anything about football and his past would know that.
The games he doesn't play in we tend to do sweet fuck all in. He is one of those players that gives us something different upfront (and by god we f***ing need it). He is one of those players that just gets goals, much like Bent was. We can be pummelled all game and then this fella can nick one from nothing. We need to keep him in the team.
Jermain Defoe was brought in to do a job: don't be Jozy Altidore. He has done that job perfectly.Considering we swapped him for 2 in 70 Jozy Altidore he's been an incredible signing.
I'm still expecting Borini to be a good signing, and regular member of our matchday squad for years. Not sure why that didn't happen last night. I reckon Sam Allardyce will get the best out of him soon enough.I'll just leave this here.
He's been a better signing than Borini
Yes I do as well mate, different player completely but the OP said signings so I thought I'd throw him in.Jermain Defoe was brought in to do a job: don't be Jozy Altidore. He has done that job perfectly.
Its not JD's fault we had to pay high wages for him to be not Jozy Altidore.

Defoe is fine for now, especially in this form.
Sam's tactics to baffle the opposition me thinks.Fluid between the two I think, even changing to 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-1-1/3-5-1-1 at times.
