On what possible criteria could you possibly say we are bigger than Villa?

Villa are very likely perceived as being the bigger club by the bulk of people who don't actually support either of the 2 clubs.Surely that is the most objective measure of such 'bigness'.

But Birmingham is much less of a 'football town' than Sunderland. I would imagine that there are huge numbers of people with notional 'allegiance' to Villa who either never or hardly ever bother to attend games.

Clearly went to the Tim Sherwood School of Respect. They only seem and look bigger because their growth hasn't been stunted through years of mismanagement and bad signings of the wrong kind. They have been allowed to establish themselves as a mainstay of the PL because they have done the right thing at the right time. If we got our act together and got a board, manager and squad of players that mirrored theirs in terms of how well they run the club we would be as big as them.
