Just looked it up in "Sunderland - the complete record" and Lowrey played at #10. According to the book the #8 was some young rapscallion called Kerr - (never make anything of himself with a name like that). Don't look too much like the Bobby Kerr we all know and love though.

They didn't have the same number each week in them days as it had to be 1-11.

I remember the PNE game Chico scored in as if it was yesterday ... One of the better matches in that barren spell before Stokoe arrived. It was a header in the Roker End iirc.
One of my top ten games -the exuberance of youth bursting on the scene. "Chico, Chico, Chico" echoed through the streets of the town that night.

My mate falling asleep and getting up to have a piss in the sink behind the bar nearly got us barred

Fallin all the way down the steep stairs pissed inside the place got me barred. RB was very nice about it though. About five years later I walked past and jenky practically begged me to go in 'why have you stopped coming to see us?". I think he had me mixed up with someone else as i was nivver a regular..........or my strides mustve been fitting my arse well that neet.

I worked with Derek at Crowtree, his hands were massive, Richard Keys always reminds me of him. Top bloke, humor dry as sticks.
I've met Derek a few times as I know bis partner. Lovely fella and puts up with me asking lots of questions. He holds a top flight record that will never be broken due to his age. He has had his health problems which my friend had had the same and he was really good with her. Derek, top bloke.

Confirmed on stat cat it is paddy lowery....now probably more famous than he has ever been in his life

Agreed - Bobby Kerr held the #8 shirt for all but the games when it was covered by Porterfield (vs Watford away - scored); Tueart (vs Orient - scored and Carlisle - both at home); Chambers (vs Swindon home). Finally, the only game Kerr missed that season was Oxford at home where the number 8 was worn by Porterfield who scored again.

Again this is from the book so don't shoot the messenger. Do you trust a book over an internet site? You pays your money and takes your chances I guess, but personally I'll stick with my book I think.

I was of an age to have been going to the games but can remember little about either Forster or Hamilton.

Back then, people not only bought programmes, but they often penned or pencilled any changes to the line-ups on the (usually) back page. Loads of Cole tors out there might ha e the answer. Statcat is a good resource for these - especially as Chewit mentioned back then players were 1 to 11.

Aye - saw the Leicester game. A 15-year old, 5'9" goalie - we actually have improved a bit, eh? :)

I don't remember the 35-yard record header, but we may have the record for the best own goal. No, not Vergini, but Len Ashurst - what a strike that was!
Some tiny goalies around in those days.

Les Green at Derby and Willie McFaul at the Mags were both well short of 6 feet tall if memory serves.
