Sunderland hold the record for the longest headed goal conceded, 35yrds by some Aston Villa player in the 50's? Sure I read this in some book of football facts as a kid, can anyone confirm?
Found it, a lad called Peter Aldis.

Aldis joined Villa from Hay Green in 1948 and left in 1960 to join . He scored his only goal of his Aston Villa career against , a header from 35 yards, with a world record until October 4, 2009. He was an integral member of Villa's 1957 -winning team.

I was at Stamford Bridge for Forster's first away game - one week after his home debut against Leicester. There was a lot of pre-publicity because due to injury problems Sunderland were forced to use a 15-year-old goalkeeper in the top flight and there were dozens of cameramen present in the 46,000 crowd. He got a tremendous ovation as he took his place between the posts and the crowd was very sympathetic throughout the match.

However, we lost 3-1 - George Herd our scorer - and although Forster did well in the circumstances it was plain to me he was never going to be a great 'keeper as he was only 5'-9" tall and would have his work cut out with high balls. Inevitably, his Sunderland career did not last long.

at the time another team, can't be sure but maybe Aston Villa had a Chico Hamilton who was a prolific scorer, the fans and the press started calling Jimmy that after his PNE goal

I got his autograph
That comes to mind now.

Aye - saw the Leicester game. A 15-year old, 5'9" goalie - we actually have improved a bit, eh? :-)

I don't remember the 35-yard record header, but we may have the record for the best own goal. No, not Vergini, but Len Ashurst - what a strike that was!

Although several keepers then weren't the Giants that they are now. At 15, he might have still been growing too.

There was a time when every Hamilton on the planet was known as "Chico". BBC Scotland even used it in their results round up: "Celtic 3 Chico Hamilton Academicals 1".

Forrest 'Chico" Hamilton: Jazz Drummer and Bandleader. One of the greatest drummers to set sticks on this planet. Did a load of soundtrack composing anarl. IIRC he composed the soundtrack to the Burt Lancaster fillum "The Sweet Smell Of Success" which I watched a couple of days ago and noticed his name in the credits.

I nivver saw Forster play but he was reserve keeper for a long time..........or as I was a bairn it seemed like a long time. I remember Hamilton, for some reason I used to get him mixed up with Henderson. I also used to get Lowrey mixed up with Latham. Wasnt hegan signed by Stokoe after the FA Cup win? May be wrong like.

Turner was always six foot in the Football Echos pre season squad round up:lol::lol:. If he was six foot then I was seven foot.

My marra reckoned he had lifts in his shoes when he went out which he obviously couldnt wear on the pitch. He also seemed to be wearing shoes with slightly more raised heels than everyone around him anarl which became a constant source of amusement between me and my marras in Annabels and Finos back in the day. Mebbes he had them "heeled" then "heeled" again THEN wore lifts anarl!!!

Finos, I was one of the first members in there, old bastard that I am

Saw Forster make his debut in the first game back in Div i..a 3-3 draw with Leicester in 1964. Gordon Banks was in their net.

played a good game as well. But only us could start a season following our first ever promotion with no manager and a 15 year old in goal. Ancient history of course, but a couple of season earlier liverpool..then shit on our shoes in terms of a footballing history..were promoted under Shankley. they never looked back.
I was there as well. I remember the sides changed ends at the start and Gordon Banks wished Forster well as they crossed.

With that goal, Chico became probably our first super sub, as substitutes hadn't been around long and you were only allowed one at that stage.

He and Forster benefitted from Alan Brown's policy of supporting youth development and playing kids. It was great when the kids were good players, such Todd, Kerr and Tueart, but at times it was reckless and left us vulnerable against more experience outfits.

I worked with Derek at Crowtree, his hands were massive, Richard Keys always reminds me of him. Top bloke, humor dry as sticks.

While playing FM15 I was looking through the record stats associated with the club and the above two players from the 60s/70s.

Jimmy Hamilton is the club's youngest-ever outfield player and the youngest-ever goalscorer for Sunderland AFC.

Derek Forster was the club's youngest ever player - a goalkeeper who deputised for Monty. He worked for Washington Leisure Centre for thirty years until retiring in 2007. He still lives in Sunderland.

Both players never played many games in total for the club. They were before my time. Does anyone have any recollections of the two players either on or off the pitch?

There was an article on the SAFC site dated this month about Jimmy Hamilton.

Great story from him about the game when he scored: “After the match the players were all asking if I was coming for a drink but I was too young and, in any case, my landlady had said I had to be in for my tea at 5.30.

“I signed quite a few autographs but then I had to run to catch my bus.”

This other site I found mentions Derek Forster amongst others. Might be a good resource for people - also might be a few on here who could contribute information.
Derek Forster understudied Monty for 8 years. Hardly got a game.

He only played 19 games according to Statcat but he lasted quite a long time. Debut in 1964, but I saw him play for us against Portsmouth (3-2) in 1972. The reason I remember it is because it was a midweek afternoon kick-off due to a floodlight ban due to a miners' strike. My mate and I were hanging around the players entrance less than an hour before kick off when Jimmy Montgomery suddenly came out and gave us two tickets for the paddock. I guess his guests had not turned up. At the time we wondered why he was not yet in his football kit, but found out when Forster was in goal. We must have skipped school that day unless it was half-term.

I was also in the kids enclosure behind the Roker End goal when 16 year old Jimmy Hamilton came on as a late sub and scored the winner in a 4-3 victory. Not exactly a claim to fame I know.

Yes I was there and remember it too. Forster attended Redby Boys on Fulwell Road where my brothers went. Unbelievable he was only fifteen years old when making his debut.
