Why do we always have to get the has beens, ffs we are a big club man
5 goals in 20 starts, 3 from the penalty spot

Sorry this was going to be a short post but as I can type fast and Excel quickly makes canny stat tables it ended up longer

Anyway, appearances per goal (Premier League only stats) can be to varied for some players simply due to being subbed on/off yet some hoy this figure about as if this is the main stat for a player. It shouldn't be and a example being Jozy and Wickham who only average 50 mins per appearance last time I checked which is quite low. Players like Aguero average mid 70's I think which is what you'd expect for a more regular player who's a regular starter if fit and will play longer.

Here's Defoe's stats hoyed into a table below to show a bit more info on his appearances, subs, goals, mis per appearance and mins per goal etc. I took them from here but can't be arsed to proof check they are correct as his Portsmouth figures are also in there.

As you can see below Defoe does gets 1 goal in 3 appearances but as he's been subbed quite a lot then he's got a low average mins on pitch per appearance. He actually scores a goal every 188 mins he's on the pitch which is just over 2 full games. In the first table that shows the last 5 seasons of him being at Spurs, his stats were better than his overall from 2003-2014 which included being at Portsmouth.

No doubt some will say he only got 1 goal in 14 appearances in his last season at Spurs and will totally disregard he only spent an average of 30 mins on the pitch. He still got a goal every 426 mins which is better than Jozy and possibly a few other strikers this season. Plus is it not harder to get into a game with less time on the pitch? 30 mins may only mean a few touches of the ball if that!

Even though he scored 1 in the league in 2013-14, he also scored 9 goals in the Europa/League cup while only being on the pitch for 750 mins so a goal every 84 mins! Look at his stats in 2010-2011 as he was getting a goal every 117 mins he was on the pitch yet some will only see the 11 goals in 25 and say just under a goal every 2 games.

Another example of why Appearances Per Goal is a bit misleading is for Chicharito. His appearances per goal is good but when you look at mins per goal then he's in the Premier League all time top 5 and IIRC he was number 1 at one point.

37 goals in 102 Appearances
Avg Appearances per Goal: 2.75
Total minutes on pitch: 4792
Avg Mins per Appearance: 47 mins
Avg Mins per Goal: 130 (1.45 90 min games)

One thing a few people are overlooking is that although his stats are good, it was also due to the fact he was in a good team. As I've said previously, there's no way Ronaldo etc would get the same stats at SAFC so why do some seem to think Defoe will without question get the same stats as he did before but now being in a weaker team with older legs?

I think he will do very well to get the same stats overall at SAFC of 180 mins pitch time per goal. He may well bang in 10 goals the rest of the season (quite doable IMO if he gets a hat trick against a shit team at home for example) which would be f***ing class but will he maintain that over time? He will also offer more to other players but who knows what's going to happen but I hope he does well at SAFC

Cannit be bothered to read all that shite.

Here's the short version:

Defoe's actually a better goal scorer than what some will say he is when quoting appearances per goal ;). It's just some on SMB can't look further than appearances per goal (probably shit at maths at school) yet sometimes it's a misleading stat if a player has been sub/subbed quite a lot.

Darren "clapper" williams at the SOL on SSN, speaking sense about the defoe/altidore swap 8-)

That's great mate, fantastic effort and content . But all you had to say was "he's better than Altidore, ergo we have improved the team"

I reckon he'll get 10 goals if he's a regular starter and plays at least 15 games. A hat trick against a shit team (quite do-able if he takes pennas anarl), a brace against the Mags and another team and then another 3 goals in 3 other games isn't that much to ask now is it?

Played an absolute blinder as the gay cop in The Boondock Saints.

Although admittedly that might not have been him.

Isnt that impressive really, is it?

Imagine that will only get worse playing upfront when he hasnt got van der vaart and that making chances for him
