Strikers who still scored plenty after 32

Heard a few on here saying at 32 Defoe is past it, we shouldnt be signing him etc. Gonna reel a few strikers off here who were/are still scoring at the top level even at 34/35 onwards.

Raul joined Schalke when 33 and scored 40 goals in 98 games for them.

Van Nistelrooy joined Hamburgers SV when 33 and score 17 goals in 44 games.

Del Piero from age 33 to 36 scored 68 goals in 121 games for Juventus.

Totti scored 42 goals in 71 games for Roma aged 33 to 34.

I'm not saying Defoe is as good as these players but do think he has similar ability as a striker and honestly think he will be a legend for the next 2 to 3 years. His age isnt a concern at all to me and I'm buzzin he chose us over other premier league clubs to end his career.

Basically, just about any proven top level striker you can think of has continued to offer goals right up until the end of their career. In our case the likes of Quinn and Phillips; up the road, Shearer. Elsewhere in the modern take your pick, there are loads. The general concern seems to be that once his pace goes he'll be largely useless, which is a load of shite. You don't become such a prolific centre forward simply by being able to run fast. David Bellion was lightning quick and he hasn't returned almost 200 goals at the top level. Players like Defoe score so many goals because they've got everything (or close to it) - pace, power, movement, intellegence and finishing. Once the pace goes (and if it does, as far as I'm aware he's still currently quick) he'll still be left with most of the other attributes.

Works exactly the same with a defender aswell. Bould's legs were gone but I still think he was the best defender I've ever seen play for us at the SOL. Quality players read the game and adapt and Defoe is quality.

Defoe has never at any time in his career been prolific. He's only exceeded 15 Premier League goals once in his career.

And there we have it. A difference of opinion on a message board. Who would have thought it.

I thought we were all in agreement that Defoe was Messi & Ronaldo's bio-engineered lovechild who will shoot us to the Champions League and anyone that disagrees is a negative c*nt, just like PoyOUT.

Wasn't Shearer in pretty impressive goal scoring form at the age of 32? That will fuck the mags up, if that response is given.

Aye, I'm pretty devastated when you think of all of the goals he scored to us after the age of 32. I remember thinking at the time 'imagine if this is regurgitated to me 12-13 years later, I'll be gutted'

I know mate, anyone would think he was in the top 10 ever Premier League goalscorers or summat daft.

He's done it by grinding them out over 14 years which is far far longer than most players get. His Premier League goals per season has only been above 15 once.

[Edit] & he's 14th btw

Alot of people don't realise his record would be even better but he was on the bench quite a bit at Spurs. He also has the most goals of anyone in the Premier League from the bench so even when he is 35 and might not start all the time he is an ideal player to have coming on for 30 Min or so

He has consistently returned one-in-three or better for every club he's been at. That is most definitely prolific in the context of the modern game.

Is Stephen Fletcher prolific, in your view?

Defoe is a striker who was playing PL football about a year ago.

He decided to leave and accepted a nice contract at Toronto FC. Who knows why he didn't continue playing PL football. Perhaps he didn't like the idea of playing for another PL team other than Spurs a year ago. Maybe he didn't want to be a squad player any longer and just wanted to play football. Whatever his reasons, we'll soon find out whether he still has it or not. But too much is being made about his age. If you're judging him on how good he'd be for a team higher in the league like Spurs then maybe you have an argument to say he's not going to cut it when he has competition like young Harry Kane. But at Sunderland he's not going to be expected to be the player he was in his prime. We've bought him for his natural goalscoring talent that can help us climb the table. The wages might make it a gamble but I don't see why his ability can be questioned until we see what he has to offer.
