He signed for Toronto FC last January. If we'd signed him last January there would have been such overwhelming joy that our fans would have been wetting their pants with excitement.

It's a year on, the fact that he's in the MLS suggests he's not the same player. But it's only been a year. And he obviously felt a move back to the PL was the right call. He must miss it and feel he's up to it. Maybe he felt he couldn't be a regular player in a strong side like Spurs anymore. And maybe he didn't want to join another PL team because nobody was offering him as much as Toronto at the time. I think this is a huge signing for us.

Hold on, why are you so worried? Listen the people in charge seem to know what there doing, if they think Defoe is going to come in & do a decent job (maybe keep us up) score goals which we need desperately. Maybe they think it's a risk (if it is money wise) worth taking.
OK we keep Altidore who can't score for toffee we go down...
Now what's the best option?

Now stop worrying about the wages, fee etc

We had to get rid of Altidore anyway. He's a non-contributing high earner - which is what Defoe is likely to be aged 34 and above.

And, I suspect, the money Defoe is on means he represents the sum total of our investment in goal scoring talent. While he's not a terrible option, I'm not convinced that he's the very best short term option available at that investment. And he categorically isn't a long term option, or an investment.

It just feels like an incredibly lazy option for a club that employs someone to handle recruitment as a full time job.

Do you honestly believe that the people in charge of SAFC seem to know what they're doing? What gives you that impression?

Depends what you define negative. I am happy we have signed him, hes better than Altidore and I dont pay the wages so its fine by me. However I see our problems as more deeply rooted than a striker, we need to create chances for them.

The people in charge seem to know what they are doing? That will be a f***ing first then
 
With a career total of 226 goals from 531 appearances, which is not far off a goal every other game is significantly better than Altidore and any of your current Mag frontline OP.

Aye fair point, I'm hoping the club back this up by bringing a couple of pacey midfielders in.

But we couldn't have shifted Altidore unless Defoe left Toronto. And I don't see how else we would improve our forward line, the money isn't there to pay a transfer fee seemingly.
