Defoe

My worry is that there seemed to be a plan, and that appears to have gone out the window. A 32 year old on a bumper deal? If every time we get into trouble and we do this then it's going to be a very expensive method. It's not my money to spend, but at the same time when there's no money left in the pot for future deals there can be no complaints. There's no doubt Defoe was a quality player in his pomp, but he isn't there any more.

On the subject of there being a better option available, I've no idea. We've got an international scouting network, and if the best they can come up with is Jermain Defoe, who we could all come up with off the top of our heads, then the transfer market is well and truly goosed.

If people are happy with the name and the big money then that's fine. If you think he's still go it and he'll be a real coup then fair enough. Hopefully he'll score a few for us. It just seems a confused signing to me. I hope I'm wrong.

I think it's a panic buy. But it's also a panic buy with some rational thought behind it. Defoe scores goals. That's just a fact. And we get rid of Jozy who doesn't score goals. If Defoe scores the goals and we stay up comfortably then it will have been worth every penny. Simple as that really. I agree that it's looking at the short term a bit too much but we're perilously close to the relegation zone and we have to act and get in a goalscorer. It also gives the fans and team a huge confidence boost to see him sign.

spot on there...... my feelings exactly.

Spend Money Ellis, we need to stay up, we need a striker who can score in the prem.
Stop wasting money on Defoe.

Aye ok.

Not our money. Get this deal done.
(if fit, perfect debut lined up for Saturday)

Has Defoe ever made any noises about going into coaching? Maybe we've got an eye on him working with the young'uns in a couple of years. What a great player to learn from.

has arrived on Wearside to finalise his move to .

That wasn't me mate. I knew that Poyet had cancelled a media appearance to have talks with us shortly before others were reporting it, but I can't remember if I posted it.

What?

I know it wasn't, I'm not talking about you at all mate

I think to a certain degree there is an element of panic about this signing, but let's be honest we need a proven goalscorer who'll hopefully hit the ground running.
The £14 million fee being quoted I'm pretty certain will include his wages over three and a half year, plus Jozys probably part of the deal
Personally I'm more than happy to have him here.

That's fair enough. I can see both sides of the argument but for some reason it doesn't sit quite right with me.

I wouldn't disagree with you or @PeruzziWatch like, but it's just such an odd transfer! It doesn't seem to make any sense.

But you know, if he scores against the Mags next year and flashes his cheb at the Gallowgate then it'll have been worth every penny.
He is a goalscorer and we are struggling for goals. Not that hard to understand.

Thankfully it doesn't matter what it sits like with any of us.

He started this thread last night when the speculation was rife. There's no mate, no contact and no info. He's just taken a punt and hoped for the best. No credit at all, I could have done it if I was a loser like him.
Lil Rob seems jealous that he hasn't got the transfer scoop. Taking it pretty seriously it seems.
