My worry is that there seemed to be a plan, and that appears to have gone out the window. A 32 year old on a bumper deal? If every time we get into trouble and we do this then it's going to be a very expensive method. It's not my money to spend, but at the same time when there's no money left in the pot for future deals there can be no complaints. There's no doubt Defoe was a quality player in his pomp, but he isn't there any more.
On the subject of there being a better option available, I've no idea. We've got an international scouting network, and if the best they can come up with is Jermain Defoe, who we could all come up with off the top of our heads, then the transfer market is well and truly goosed.
If people are happy with the name and the big money then that's fine. If you think he's still go it and he'll be a real coup then fair enough. Hopefully he'll score a few for us. It just seems a confused signing to me. I hope I'm wrong.
I think it's a panic buy. But it's also a panic buy with some rational thought behind it. Defoe scores goals. That's just a fact. And we get rid of Jozy who doesn't score goals. If Defoe scores the goals and we stay up comfortably then it will have been worth every penny. Simple as that really. I agree that it's looking at the short term a bit too much but we're perilously close to the relegation zone and we have to act and get in a goalscorer. It also gives the fans and team a huge confidence boost to see him sign.
