Dave Whelan in more hot water

"Asked by the Jewish Telegraph whether he himself had ever used the term, he replied: "When I was growing up we used to call the Chinese [restaurant] 'chingalings'.
"We weren't being disrespectful. We used to say: 'We're going to eat in 'chingalings'."

He was quoted as calling Chinese people "chinks" last month too.

But that's just the way it was. These days it's the norm to be pissed off, offended and over-react about everything.

Burn him at the stake I say, he's up there with the biggest racist in the 20th Century "Tom & Jerry".

It pisses me off that the PC brigade pick up on words that were / are used particularly by the older generation (like me) that have no intention of being racist. They are so offended by words but seemingly can't get to grip with the definition of racism or a racist.

correct its not racist abuse its pc gone f***ing mad , every fucka and their granny jumps on every minuscule dropping t show their anti racist view !
Whilst I detest racism in all of its guises I do think we're a little bit over sensitive at times, this is an older man who clearly doesn't understand the PC times we live in now. I'm sure there is no malice involved in his comments however he would be better off staying away from the media. A closed mouth gathers no feet as they say.

All the people saying 'pc brigade' are clearly racist. Being old has fuck all to do with anything there will be people his age who completely disagree with his comments.

So I'm going to object to being called a Sassanach, Pom and a Limey.
How many on here have said I'm going to the Chinese? It's a play on the word Chinese it's not meant to be offensive. The trouble with Whelan is knowing the current day hysteria around such things he should simply keep his mouth shut.
These witch hunts though are a bigger crime than the perceived offence.

Is it not all about the context it's said in though with him? Bearing in mind he will have grown up in a working class time and this will have been the norm up until what, maybe 15 years ago it started to cause such uproar.

Like the vast majority, I don't get racism. My thought is if you cut us all open across the middle we look the same so the outside means nowt.

I just think in this day and age I'd understand if it was a younger generation being lambasted for it but maybe take a look at the person and what generation they are from. In no way am I saying people from his generation will use these terms or understand and agree with him however quite a lot will.

Its used for the same meaning though, slang if you want.
It's kind of like when someone told me Jack was short for John. I was confused for about a week as they're both the same length. Then they said a John can be called Jack as a nickname. Still confused me as it seems a pointless nickname.

the journalist had probably spoken to spoken somebody else who would state that DW used those words. So he would have been in bother anyway. People however take things way out of context. I can remember reading comics as a boy that refers to square heads, kraunts, slanty eyes. we also referred to Jocks, Paddy and Taff. Chinkys and Pakis were never ever a derogatory name. the world is going mad and the pc brigade needs to get a grip on reality.
I am more concerned about what is going on in the Ukraine and what utterly barbaric acts isis are responsible for.

course it's racist you muppet
No its not racist you muppet. Is it offensive? Is it designed to cause harm or embarrassment? No, it is not. Its simply a nickname - and by the way, the latest one was a word he *used* to use many years ago. Fuck me, some of you are going to be shocked if you ever travel to Asia and listen to the names they have for whites over there! I get called Ang Moh ("red haired") almost every single day here in Singapore. Its really not an issue.

People have got to stop this over-reaction with race, nationality, whatever. We are different and we should celebrate these differences. As long as people are being treated equally, there really is no issue here at all.

The problem with Whelan was his Jewish comments.

This. It seems almost fashionable to be offended, usually on behalf of someone else. The worlds gone mad.

People will be putting claims in for it soon

Racist was a term to describe disgusting things such as the slave trade and general inequality, not things like an old man saying he used to go to the 'chingalings', morons.

What? Lambasted for saying Chinese? what is offensive by that comment? is jocks racist too then?

Let's hope that John doesn't take offense to being called Jack
