Have to say I don't think there is anything wrong with having a steadying influence at the top of the odi order. Work a single off every ball and you score 300 after all

Disagree mate,I think it is about getting off to a fast start when the fielding restrictions are in and the ball hard.

About 20 years ago I got up in the middle of the night to watch a World Cup quarter final against Sri Lanka, and saw them play a new brand of cricket where the openers went for it in the first 15 overs.

They won that World Cup that year and since then most teams have used that as a blueprint of how to play one day cricket.

Really attacking batsman over the years have filled that opening role the likes of Gilchrist,Sehwag,Gayle,Mccullum and Gibbs, yet 20 years on England still looking like you say to have a steady influence at the top of the order.

I think that thinking is about 20 years outdated.

Swann is right we have the openers in the county game who could play that role.

I absolutely take that point and wouldnt really disagree. I would say though that having a guy who stays in may allow more freedom for the hitters in the side. This is England though so we're just as likely to be 30-4 and needing the likes of Buttler and Morgan to play like Paul Collingwood!

Yeah can see your point too mate, especially when playing in English conditions where ball swinging around early, just that the World Cup is in Australia next time around and got a feeling we will need big scores in that tournament and on them wickets the best way to do that is to get off to a fast start so we need to start preparing now,by picking players who can give us that fast start.

Certainly puts a lot of pressure on the bowling side.

A bit of both would be ideal ;)

Southampton aside, Bell has been in shocking form. Fuck knows why he is playing and Moeen ain't. Would also bring in Lumb or Kieswetter for Cook.

Irony being we won the world T20 playing that brand of cricket.

English cricket is plagued by conservative, negative attitudes.
