A massively noticeable upturn in form from Sunderland's midfield general should, but probably won't, lead to an international call up, writes @GavinSAFC. When Lee Cattermole was handed the man of the match award following on from Sunday's draw against Manchester United it was recognition for a level of performance that Sunderland fans have come...

as well as he is playing for us...its simply not a role Hodgson plays..so he has no need for a Lee Cattermole or any other player of that type

and lets be honest...his tackling, is hard and usually fair...but it wouldnt be tolerated at international level, where a defender breaking wind is enough to knock a player over.

I'd posit a different interpretation. Perhaps if the likes of Cattermole is being thought of as England class (at least by some on here) it says an awful lot more about how much the quality of English players has deteriorated than the renaissance of a workhorse-type player with little skill or real flair. I also see England's world ranking position has nosedived to a realistic 25th position!

After watching Delph for Villa last weekend, he looks like he may get a game with England.
Fast, strong, direct.
I doubt Catts would get a game with the England set up these days.

OK, he is nowhere near good enough to shine for England.

They went well didn't they. He turned out to be a top selection.

Or perhaps he wasn't good enough either.

Cleverley will get picked again though.

There's hardly a great deal of natural central midfielders for Hodgson to pick from to be honest. If Cattermole can carry on his form of the last 9 months or so, there's no reason why he shouldn't be picked.
