Aye, he can bowl some decent off spin too. It would be canny to have a leg spinner as well as a finger spinner in the team, give some balance.

He's a far better keeper than prior as are most other alternatives, but as keepers are expected to be batters first and that has been the problem. Prior is a better batter than any keeper England have had since stewart.
Read or foster would have been the blokes wearing the gloves if they weren't expected to be a batter over the primary job. Prior has given away more runs than he has scored for the majority of 2013 by dropping simple catches and giving away countless byes

Fully agree with this.
Not that up to speed on WK's in County cricket but always thought Davies looked a cracking keeper and a batsman who could maybe make a few in Test Cricket.

Cook, Bell, Pietersen, Prior, Broad and Anderson stay from the old guard to give some continuity and Root, Ballance and Stokes have shown enough to stick with. Take your pick then from a dozen or so to fill the squad, it would be Finn plus a spinner if I had my way, but who knows.
Everybody at Somerset, absolutely everybody. Buttler has moved Counties because he wasn't the best 'keeper at Somerset, and he's managed to average a massive 31 playing as a specialist batsman. It's a patently ridiculous to suggest that Buttler is ready for Test cricket, as is the witch hunt against Prior. The SMB cricket forum is weird parallel universe where people make up stuff about players like Pietersen and Prior and pass them off as fact.

Yeah can't argue with average just stated,however just like the look of Buttler looks to have something about him,when watching him play for somerset seemed to produce in the big games when the pressure on,all be it I admit in one day stuff.
Think Prior deserves to still be in the team based off previous record,but just think Buttler is the future and has a lot of improvement in him.
Stokes does not have great average but just has that something about him
However totally take your point about his stats at the moment,so certainly could not argue for him to be in the side at the moment.

spot on. And averaging 31 playing as a specialist batsman at Taunton is spectacularly average. I reckon Gordon Muchall would average 35 plus at Taunton.
Prior has to come back into the team. It was entirely tokenistic putting Bairstow in. I dont believe for one second that any of the management or the skipper thought that he would come in and do a better job than Prior with bat or gloves.
Prior has had a stinking year, like many of our batsmen, but has to come back in. Not only because he is quality but because there are also no serious contenders.[DOUBLEPOST=1389040114][/DOUBLEPOST]
Stokes averages 35 with the bat playing most his cricket at the Riverside and balancing batting with bowling.
Buttler has talent but for Test cricket he looks a million miles away. His shot repertoire would be easily negated at the minute

The best thing that happened to Prior long term is that he got dropped for the last 2 tests. It is clear that Bairstow is nowhere near good enough. I just hope Prior does not get tempted to make a few quid in the IPL and plays the first half of the season for Sussex gets his confidence back. He will score plenty of runs in the championship.

The trouble with trying to predict a future line up is complicated by the withering effect that being in this England seems to have on players. They all look reduced by the experience. Even KP seems unsure of himself in that team, and how ridiculous does that seem? But the effect on the quick bowlers, the most important part of the team, is far more worrying.
But in an ideal world I'd be picking something like this team and let it develop.

2. Root/Robson/Vince/Carberry/Compton
3. Root/Trott/Robson
4. Pieterson. V.C.
5. Bell
6. Stokes
7. Prior/Foster/Butler
8. Broard

carberry a c is generous when you could argue his awful drop set the tone for the whole tour and he got starts in most matches and failed to push on.
bell E, pietersen C.... ??
james anderson C? again very generous same score as tremlett, not sure how he scraped a C..
scott borthwick E? seems to be based on his selection, taking 4 wickets at 20ish on a pitch that didn't have time to deteriorate.

I think he's got something about him, from the limited amounts I've seen him, and I like the fact he's moved to Lancs to get a regular glove spot. It just seems that he's played a couple of T20 innings on the telly and that's it now, he's the man in some people's eyes. Silly IMO.

Its clear that something needs to change but it would be ridiculous to get rid of the whole team and start again, its a mentality thing more than anything. The team i would go for is as follows:
Cook
Morgan
Bell
Pietersen (C)
Ballance
Stokes
Prior (VC)
Borthwick
Broad
Anderson
Overton/Mills/Finn
People may look at Morgan at the top of the order and think its a ridiculous selection and i would have agreed 6 weeks ago but things have changed. There is absolutely no tempo to our innings at all, Cook and especially Carberry were like sitting ducks desperate not to get out rather than actually trying to score runs. Compare this to Warner for the Aussies; watching him i was thinking we are going to have to get him out early or he will hurt us. The stats may suggest otherwise but Carberry's displays were pathetic and he was so far out of his depth it was unreal. If the Morgan experiment doesnt work against Sri Lanka and India then id go for either Sam Robson or Joe Root (whoever is in the best form) just purely because they are young.
Pietersen is getting a lot of criticism but thats just because he is the big name player and people expect him to smash 200 every game, he was still our best batsman on this tour despite not playing well (Stokes may argue with this). Cook lacks any kind of leadership or charisma and is so negative, he has to be stripped of the captaincy, this well help his own game aswell. Looking at captaincy options none jump out straight away, i think Bell is too similar in mentality to Cook and im not a fan of bowlers being captains which rules out Broad. The only 2 options would be Pietersen and Prior but he is not even guaranteed a place after being dropped. KP has a different mentality, he is attacking and he is actually very intelligent and articulate; i agree with Vaughan about giving him more responsiblity and he is apparently very very good with the young players in the team. Things are not working with Cook in charge and it would be pointless to sack him and appoint a carbon copy as nothing would change. Id also get rid of Flower and bring in Collingwood in some capacity.
I think that side would bat at a decent tempo and all of the top 9 can bat with 2 dependable (usually), experienced seamers, 2 good all rounders and an out an out pace bowler gives for a balanced side. The selectors will obviously not go for this. Thoughts?

Some interesting opinions in this article:
I particularly like the look of Vaughan's team although I haven't really seen much of Robson or Ballance. If you can improve Root and Borthwick's bowling playing them along with Stokes gives you plenty of options eg Mills to bowl 4/5 overs as fast as he can, and still allows you to bat down to number 9.
I don't think there's anything massively wrong with the core of the team but the attitude, approach and leadership of the team all need some serious consideration before the next test matches. I also agree with Tufnell's statement about county cricket, there can't have been a start to a county season where so many players will be thinking if they have a good couple of months they've got a great chance of getting into the test team. Massive incentive for loads of players.
