Grrr I got crucified by you ubers for suggesting Cook drop to number 3!

i have been thinking about this for a while. since root came in and cook's average sank i was wondering if opening with a young kid was just another bit of added responsibility and it finally became too much. i think compton, root, cook as a top three may have some merit to it - it would be a signal that cook can't cope though, which may make it an impossible action[DOUBLEPOST=1388864312][/DOUBLEPOST]
Woakes, Wood, Jordan, Harris and Mills are touring Sri Lanka with the Lions, Overton's injured. They seem to be next in line in the eyes of the selectors.

my mate raves about chris jordan. would be a crucial addition to the side anarl.

between robson, jordan, stokes, trott/kp/prior we would have 5/8 test nations represented, stick rankin and morgan in and we could play a world XI

I've never seen Overton or Mills bowl but they, by reports, seem to bowl up to mid 90's mph which is what we need IMHO.

I'd like to see Ballance, Bairstow, Root and Stokes all play through the summer. Fuck knows regarding a spinner !!!

Interesting that it was no contest at Somerset when it came to deciding which keeper to retain between Butler and Keisswetter. Most Somerset regulars believe Keisswetter is a better player with bat and gloves.

Good point mate, although to say it was a no contest is a bit unfair, got impression Somerset were gutted to lose him, works both ways though as England selectors have chosen Buttler for one day team ahead of him,so must be looking to the future,so why not give him a try in the tests and stick by him

You a big Durham fan?
I am. He's fast as fuck. I'm sure he was clocked at 90mph last year in one game. Anyone confirm this? Strange run up mind.[DOUBLEPOST=1388964268][/DOUBLEPOST]

Borthwick should be given a chance. He did nowt wrong in the Ashes Test he played in. No use writing him off after 1 game. Hoy the lad in and give him a year. See how he gets on. The only thing is that Durham will end up fucked and relegated.[DOUBLEPOST=1388964318][/DOUBLEPOST]

Also a bit of a wanker. Head up his arse.[DOUBLEPOST=1388964508][/DOUBLEPOST]
Are you asking who I think's better? I've no idea, never seen Overton. I just wouldn't describe someone who can bowl 90mph+ as medium fast
Saw him play at Durham last year and the year before - &

Difficult to judge on just a game or two.

Not as much as England.[DOUBLEPOST=1388859448][/DOUBLEPOST]
Wood is Fast Medium.Overton is Fast.
I'm sure wood was the fastest bowler in the championship last season.

Regardless he bowls 90mph so he is not a fast medium bowler.[DOUBLEPOST=1388973442][/DOUBLEPOST]
Woakes is not quick - 70-75 mph. More a batting all rounder
He bowls 80s like recall him bowling around 85, doesn't make a difference he'll never be international quality as much as Giles will try to get him in the side.

Buttler averages 31 in first class cricket, without looking anything more than an average keeper.

A one day talent, no doubt, but let's not pretend he is ready for test match cricket

not many would say borthwick was ready for test cricket, myself very much included.

despite that the lad took 4 wickets, all before tea on day 3

For me we keep Cook and Bell as batsmen, Stokes at 6, then Broad (and maybe Anderson) from the bowlers.

Every other position is up for grabs for me and they should all be required to perform in the early County games.

Actually got a feeling Stoneman might get a chance. If he can dodge some early season green toppers at the Riverside and manage to make a few he could be a good bet. Still very surprised he never made the Lions tour.

smacks of throwing out the baby with the bath water that like. anderson had a fairly poor tour but is still one of the best in the world, especially at home. prior i think is still the best wicketkeeper we have, i think he is safe more so because everyone else is no where close to him.

should be fun though watching the likes of trott, root, ballance, taylor etc shooting it out for a spot in the top & middle order. by virtue of being in the right place at the right time [literally] i think borthwick deserves to be given a chance too

edit: don't agree about stoneman though, even know he still gets no respect from a lot of durham supporters, a shot at the lions tour yes but i can't see him maknig test cricket anytime soon.

stoneman, borthwick, stokes, mustard, wood, onions - all players championed to be playing for england on here over the last few days, we may as well just ask for promtion from the county championship to test status:cool:

Haha we would probably have beated England in this series to be honest, as long as we had Stokes.

I just think it is time to start again for England. The day would always come. Trott cannot come back in to play Sri Lanka on some slow decks for me, and KP simply doesn't look bothered. Happy to go with Ballance but I really think Stoneman is a class act. I remember seeing him at Trent Bridge last year and he was battering international bowlers to all parts.

In terms of Prior I do disagree, although I get a lot of stick for it. I genuinely think his keeping is very poor, and always has been. Yes it got a bit better for a short period and he gets away with standing back, but up to the stumps he struggles for me. Time to move on as there are loads of keepers around in the country who could be given a go, and I would rather see them get a home series where they could actually make a few runs, ahead of a baptism of fire on a tour!

Bowling wise I am sure Jimmy will play on. He will swing it round corners at home, I just worry about him away from home. Not sold on Borthwick as a bowler either. Happy if they see potential as a top 6 or 7 batsmen allowing him to be the 2nd spinner, but he needs to bowl county overs for me.

Mills was in Australia for this seies. He was broght over so the team could practice in the nets against a left handed quickie. They had to stop the practice session because he was to dangerous to our openers.

"England's batsmen are running the gauntlet in the nets ahead of after Tymal Mills hit three batsmen with his thunderbolts.

They are being put through their paces by the Essex quickie, who has been flown out along with Harry Gurney, to provide a similar contest to the one that .

Alastair Cook is wearing a multi-coloured shiner on his right arm where Mills has pinned him twice, while Joe Root has been banged on the helmet and Michael Carberry in the stomach."

All three accept it is part and parcel of preparing for the Ashes, but facing the man Cook calls ‘the fastest bowler in England’ is proving to be an extra test of its own.
