That spell on the 1st day of the 2005 series was about as good a spell of bowling as you are ever likely to see.

As much as Ponting helped us out with that ridiculous decision to field, think McGrath getting injured in the warm-up for the 2nd test was huge for us.

One of the very best. We have his injury in the 05 series to thank for helping us to that series win.

Agreed.

We won the 2nd test by 2 runs (IIRC) - if McGrath had been fit, I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have made more than 2 runs' difference.
 
Nee way will Australia declare on 400 and leave 2 and a half days for England to bat. Not that they'd be able to do it anyway.

It's totally pointless now. England are shot to pieces. I don't think I've ever seen a sports team so overwhelmingly and comprehensively fucked like this.

I'm enjoying the commentary far more than the cricket. They have just about given up on commentating on the on field action thank God.
 
Can someone explain to me why a batsman who bowls very occasionally is given the ball ahead of someone who is selected as a specialist spinner?

The bowling so far this morning has been dreadful.

Matches about 99% of our bowling all series.

We've been obsessed with bowling short, and the decision to take Finn, Tremlett and Rankin because of these bouncier pitches has been shown up to be absolutely ridiculous.[DOUBLEPOST=1388882807][/DOUBLEPOST]

More like Carberry and Cook will be out for 2 each, Stokes will get 350 and it will be left to Borthwick and Broad to bring it home.

The pitch map graphics have been illuminating. Our seamers seem to have been in competition to see who can cover the biggest area. You'd think that today of all days (pink day for Glenn McGrath's missus), the bowlers would have twigged that bowling in consistently good areas in what gets you wickets as McGrath was a complete master of the art.

Thing is though, there have been periods where they have bowled well, in the right areas and have been rewarded with wickets.

But then next session we've come out and reverted to banging it in and bowling all over.[DOUBLEPOST=1388883261][/DOUBLEPOST]

Don't get me started :lol:

Taking away a slip on the opening morning of a test in order to save runs, watching the ball go exactly where you've just took that man away from, and changing it back again 2 balls later.

The whole series has been a shambles, from squad selection to field positions and everything in between

I think we've been spoilt for the last 15 years with Hussain, Vaughan and Strauss having been exceptional captains. Cook is a wonderful opening batsman but out of his depth in comparison with the previous 3 captains.
