Aye but who understands the Simpson paradox?
I had no idea what they are on about but it looked quite straight forward in Wikipedia. Basically, 1 bowler had a better average in the 1st and 2nd innings but the second bowler had the better overall average. Just an anomaly arising due to the relative size of the sample in the 1st and 2nd innings.

So there.

Maybe I should work at 5.30 every day.....[DOUBLEPOST=1388727818][/DOUBLEPOST]Get in Borthwick! Needed that, him and England

5 for Stokes, on a hat trick!

But yeah, thrown the game away again

3 in the over, 6 for Stokes, well bowled

Well Done Stokes.

How many runs on the board before our first wicket falls then?

We will clearly lose again but the most interesting part of this match IMHO is how the youngsters and new lads perform eg stokes, Borthwick, ballance and BAirstow.

Great performance by Ben and also Scott. Tough ask for a leggie making his ashes and test debut on day 1.

i think i would take that tbh[DOUBLEPOST=1388719980][/DOUBLEPOST]

just missed borthwick's first over in test cricket[DOUBLEPOST=1388720046][/DOUBLEPOST]shame the last ball of the over went for 4. first two balls a bit off, 1 too short and wide for 1, one close to a full toss then three good balls, got some turn even towards the end..[DOUBLEPOST=1388720087][/DOUBLEPOST]now rankin has broken down. it's all turning a bit england

Saw it then went to bed. I don't think I could be more annoyed at the Aussie recovery. It's almost comical.

I feel sorry for Scott being thrown in like that with the ball, at least a few pundits have pointed out "hold on..... He isn't really a bowler" which a lot of people (Cook included seemingly) haven't realised.

The lad is barely an allrounder imho

I watched him bowl and I thought it was unfair on the lad. There is something badly wrong with this set-up and I think it is Flower and his cronies.

great day for Stokes but another embarrassing episode in general, allowing Steve Smith to score another ton.......

Ridiculous that we let them off the hook yet again

This is from BBC live text, 21 minutes into the match:

Aus 19-0 (Rogers 4, Warner 15)
Australia have started well, prompting England to dispense with Anderson's short leg. Right to defend? You've won the toss and bowled, Alastair Cook. Warner, chewing gum, tape on his bat, waits and is beaten by one that bites away. Then back in, swing as it passes the bat. Surely it's worth keeping that short leg for a little longer?

Ali Cooks captaining decisions have been shocking all series. He's captained us to cowardly defensive play and failed to apply any pressure on the opposition.

Geoffrey Boycott, Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special
"Graham Onions can bowl, but all they do is give him one practice match on tour. If he doesn't bowl well, they say he can't play the Test matches. Some bowlers take a while to find their form on a tour. I bet Bresnan and Rankin don't have better Championship records than Onions."[DOUBLEPOST=1388741069][/DOUBLEPOST]

What pisses me off more than anything is that we've consistently bowled too short in the whole series. What on earth is the bowling coach for if not to correct this? The wicket-taking deliveries have all been pitched up. No problem having players driving if wickets are tumbling. Combative aussies are always going to score at a decent lick. We can't worry about that when we need wickets.[DOUBLEPOST=1388741208][/DOUBLEPOST]

Michael Vaughan, Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special
"Ben Stokes is the one positive for England in this series. He's got his mate Scott Borthwick out there with him today and Durham are producing some good, young cricketers. Their coach, Geoff Cook, and captain, Paul Collingwood, deserve a lot of credit. Colly is actually coaching Scotland at the moment. Why is he not involved with England?"

Absolutely this.

We are short on leaders on the pitch and in the stands.[DOUBLEPOST=1388742108][/DOUBLEPOST]
If Stokes keeps going for 5 an over but doesn't take wickets he won't be around for long.

The management seem obsessed with scoring rates but i'd take a wicket-taking bowler over Bresnans every time
