Is it just me that is struggling with the hype a bit?

In the summer, he passed 50 ony twice in 10 innings. One of which was a big one admittedly, but even then he should have been out in single figures. This series so far, there has been one innings of note.

It's not even the scores, he looks a little lost and doesn't seem to have an area of scoring to relieve the pressure

Jury is out for me

Hes young and while I'll admit he does tend to get bogged down in his innings, hes shown enough talent (that 180 at Lords a fine example) to warrant being given more of a chance and to persist with him. You've also got to factor in that hes been moved about the order which isn't ideal for a player so young. I think there is a good batsmen in there, hes still learning his trade and he can be the future for us.

I don't get the moving about the order argument, he was all over the shop last night, very lucky not to nick off on numerous occasions, that's nothing to do with where you are in the order. Also, he learnt his game batting at the top of the order in county cricket so I don't see why he should bat lower down for England.

That said I've got bigger concerns about Bairstow, it's obvious he's got a deficiency in his technique that everyone is aware of and yet he's back in the test squad having had no chance to rectify it because he's barely played any first class cricket this year. I think Buttler will be playing in the first test series if he does ok batting wise between now and then. Or Prior will be back, think it will be a while before we see Bairstow back in the test team.

What the hell is batting coach Graham Gooch doing?

he's still a kid and it's not like the experienced pros around him are setting any better an example. stick with him, he has bags of talent but is not the finished article. much like stokes who has hardly set the world alit either [including his odi matches here] batting he has only had one good knock and bowling hes had one good game anarl

Aye m8. He had a Gate wider than the one at the Farm at the top of our road last night.

This is the biggest problem IMHO, where ever he comes in, at the moment he does so with no confidence his team mates can hold an innings together, therefore allowing him to only have to worry about the process of batting. The pressure on the young lads coming into the team at the moment must be absolutely immense when they walk out to bat. It's massively to Root's credit that he's made one big score during his England career to date and looked threatening often as well.

never been convinced about bairstow tbh anyway, i don't rate him and just see this as a chance to motivate prior and take him out of the firing line for a game or two..

This.

The jury is still out to an extent but I reckon in 2-3 years we will laugh that we ever doubted Root.

Time will tell.

I should be a selector

No, you shouldn't. Anybody who drops Root is just a silly idiot. He's potentially the best batsman in the side bar KP. Mentally, dropping Root could be career suicide. Carberry is 33 and has hardly set the world alight yet is still in the side.

A little bit over dramatic don't you think  Root is mentally strong and will be back in during the summer.

I disagree with the decision mind. Also I think it puts more pressure on Borthwick as Root can contribute with some useful overs of off spin if Scott is getting clattered a bit.
