TBF they have played exceptionally well. it is a real shame we have been so shite as this could have had the makings of a great, great test series.
With the last ashes only just finished before this one started it was always going to be a hiding to nothing. Totally ruined both series having them so close together. Still, if we had played cricket like he did last time in australia it could have been compulsive viewing. as it is neither series will be in anyway memorable
Completely disagree. Their batting has been just as fragile as ours but the key difference has been two things:
1. Determination when up against it.
Usually Haddin with a gritty slow 50. Something only Carberry has looked like doing for us.
2. Mitchell Johnson. Having a captain who knows how to use him has helped massively and he was always going to play a massive role in the series. There was been one prolonged spell in 4 tests where our batsmen have settled against him. Every other time we've looked shit scared. IMO, Broad should be used in this role. 3/4 overs of bouncy short stuff to rough them up.
Unlike last time we were there no side has truely dominated. They've been 160/5, 200/6 etc just as much as us but they've had the reserves and desire to come through. We haven't.
I see absolutely no reason you'd bat Borthwick, a number three batsman, behind Stokes and Bairstow

Reading some of the media reports looks like Borthwick will play. The bad news for me looks like he will be the front line spinner and batting at no7 or no8 as some poster are suggesting on here. Surely if he is going to play he is asked to do what he does for Durham be a front line batsmen and second spinner. That is the role he performed so well for Durham that has got him in the ashes squad.
You genuinely think he's less capable than Broad right now? Utter madness. He's not been picked as a bowler and form him to be lower than Bairstow would be utterly self-defeating. He's currently a batsman who bowls a bit. I'd have him at 6, with Bell at 3 and Ballance at 5 if they drop Carberry and Panesar. Would accept 7 if he comes in behind Stokes' immense Test experience
So you want to find a place in the England test side for a player who bats at no9 and is only an occasional bowler, that basically saying he is not ready for test match cricket with bat or ball, Stokes made his debut 3 weeks ago batted at no6 and was first change seamer.he has only been a number 3 this year and didn't start the year number 3 he started at 8 as he has been for most of this county career thus far. he is a young lad, will be making his test debut in near impossible circumstances and to play him at 3 would be a possible disaster IMO. i would bat him around 9 with a view to working him up the order in time if he shows he can handle it. he won't have faced anything like the attack australia will throw at him and to ask him to do so facing a new ball [probably an over or two into the innings at most if we continue as we have].
the senior players have to stand up and be counted, if i was stokes, bairstow or broad i would want to bat before him to give him a slower introduction into test cricket.[DOUBLEPOST=1388504528][/DOUBLEPOST]
i don't think he should be a front line spinner as in bowling 30 overs in a day, i'm not convinced we should be playing with a front line spinner at all, if it is tredwell is best suited to that. borthwick and root to provide occasional overs, i think borthwick should be in as a spinning all rounder batting lower than usual in hostile conditions. i don't think borthwick is the answer at number 3 - you can't tell me he is a better batsman than trott, root or bell.

I remember standing at Lunch in 2007 watching a tribute to Warne and McGrath on the big screen at the SCG, that was just before they put the final nail in the 5-0.
The general consensus was 5-0 was shit yes, but they had been gubbed by some of the all time great cricketers. This Australian team, Clarke aside, are a load of journeymen.
It's been quite frankly a pathetic, shambolic, inept, embarrassing, and gutless performance as a team, and heads should roll.

The more I think about it I'd be inclined to pick him in place of Root (although not at 3 - possibly 7/8) and I could actually see England wanting him to be the long term replacement for Swann - especially when you look at how how good a fielder he is (and that he's a better batsman). Plus Scotty supports the correct NE football team.
His fielding has been wank. However I can't see Root doing any better than Carberry. Carbs for me has been one of our better performers with the bat. Although that's not saying much![]()
