Tbf some of his family come from blyth, perhaps an uncle got him to support them bastards. He would have been 13, not everyone has a team when there 6.
 

Not sure why he's getting all this abuse tbh loads of cricketers have retired during a series and IMO the best time to do it when we have nothing to play for so we can try to find his successor.
England's best spinner since god knows when and won us plenty of matches I'm surprised he hasn't stayed on for the odi and 20\20 format but says a lot about the guy wanting to beat his best as seeing test matches as the pinical

I cant believe how inept and soft as shite we've been. The whole lot of them bar Stokes appears to have crumbled. It cant be just down to the Aussies though. Maybe theyve all lost the stomach for the battle having been made millionaires. If thats the way they feel its better off that they retire with good grace and leave England to rebuild. I see no way now of avoiding a 0 v 5 whitewash.

Be interesting too see who the next Manager is and how England go about the rebuilding process. Must give one or two Durham lads a chance eg Borthwick.

Spot on mate.

It's good to see Stokes getting plenty of credit but apart from that it's been dire.
 
No one is a test match spinner yet (that can compete for Swann's place)

Borthwick, Briggs & Kerrigan aren't ready...and Monty is not a bowl-sides-out type spinner.
 
One good thing about Swann chucking it in now is that there is a central contract going spare. It would be handy if the ECB decide Stokes has to be looked after from to big a work load and award him it. Be interesting to see what Durham do if this happens.
 
Not too surprised really. A bit by the timing, but only a bit.

He dragged a successful summer out of himself after his elbow operation, but it was clear, even then, that he wasn't quite the bowler he had been, just still a very good off spinner, and with the cache of having a tremendous five years or so leading up to it.

Was he supposed to carry on, knowing that the sharp dip and turn was not, after all, going to come back? Probably not I'd say, especially after the Aussies had made a decision to attack him whenever possible, a good plan that has worked.

But Swanny will be very badly missed. There are no English spinners within a planetary orbit of his ability at his best, nor have there been since Deadly Derek retired.

Another brick out of the wall. England will need to build again, which is fair enough. This has been a successful, largely unchanged team over the time of Andy Flower's tenure, and such teams grow old together. This was always likely with us as England play far more cricket than any other country. They are worn out and Swanny is bowled out. But well done Swanny.

I see your point, but we need our senior players to face up to the remaining two tests. Do you think we should throw in a bunch of novices in front of 90,000+ at the MCG?

Stokes will be getting a central contract without a doubt and as you say Durham will just have to deal with that. I suspect it won't be by bringing in a proven player as the finances are clearly fragile, but good luck to Stokes. He deserves it and Durham's loss will be England's gain. My concern for Durham is that Borthwick might be the next one on England's list and clearly things seem to be turning towards Onions getting a call sooner rather than later.

Do we have any promising youngsters coming through who could replace those two in the domestic game? Our side could be decimated if England take all three.

I agree re the timing of Swann's retirement. I'm not sure your initial post would have been so strong had he been a Sunderland supporter that hated the mags that had got more test wickets than anyone in the world over the last 5 years. I expected it from Mackem DJ but not necessarily from you.

The mags often complain about Sunderland fans being 'obsessed' with NUFC. It is utter bollocks but its people like you where it comes from. I mean for fucks sake as if its remotely relevant who he supports. Get a life mate.
