We just dont seem to have any pace watsoeva........Wait till Johnson starts throwing them down around Cook's throat .......Our attack looks fucked
To be fair there are very few pacemen in the world at present, so that's not much of a surprise. But if you can't take wickets you need to create pressure some other way, and England simply haven't bowled with sufficient skill and discipline to lock the batsmen in and frustrate them. Sometimes on flat pitches you're not going to consistently bowl rippers but in that case you need to keep the batsmen from getting away, but just look at the run rate of Australia all series, never really dropped below around 3, often a good bit more.

But then good teams will have to outbat other teams on occasion, so that shouldn't be a disaster. But England have consistently failed to reach anything competitive, or even look like getting there.

Whichever way you look at we've been comprehensively worse with bat and ball, really not much more to it than that.

Honestly think today would have been a day for Onions

Doing fuck all, tight line, tie them down and wait for them to make mistakes

Geoffrey Boycott, Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special
"At five down, England were not good enough to grasp the opportunity. The concern for England is that James Anderson is not doing anything with the ball, he was straight up and down. Graeme Swann has been a matchwinner for England and controlled matches when he isn't taking wickets. He could do neither today - he was gifted his two wickets."

Also from the live text:

Here's an interesting stat for you. Since the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, Jimmy Anderson is averaging over 45 with the ball. Has the Burnley Express hit the buffers?[DOUBLEPOST=1386929992][/DOUBLEPOST]
Did I hear Saker right there....."As selectors we make mistakes too !!"

Only Not Including Our Natural Seamer

The really grating thing is -where are the plans? Warner is going to try and hit everything for six, clearly-where's the field and the bowling to capitalise on that? Haddin has been the key batsman in every innings, and we look no closer to sorting him out. Australia's bowling tactics are now transparent, so why are England getting out to the same thing again and again? It's as if they're just playing everything in a vacuum. We've not just been outplayed, but totally out thought as well, to the point where it looks as though we have put no thought into anything.

Mike Selvey made the same point in the Guardian and said what made it even more frustrating is that no team is more fully prepared in test cricket due to Andy Flower's control freakery. So why do we look like we've never seen a cricket ball before?

The bowlers look over-coached and the batsmen under-coached

Disappointing after a great start, if Haddin had gone to any of the near misses while he was in single figures it would have been a different day. Very similar to the 1st Test in that regard I suppose.

Smith batted beautifully.

I worry about tomorrow with temperatures in the 40s all day, they have to get off the field quickly.

For all the talk of Australia’s attack mind England have only sort of batted once without giving the majority of their wickets away. If they can bat with some patience and discipline it will be interesting to see what Aussie can do

Don't think we've necessarily been out thought. More a cumulative effect of poor decsions from the Englands selectors right the way through to players on the field.

First & foremost, as already mentioned, Onions should have been in the squad. Rankin, Tremlett & Finn were picked for their height & not their ability to take wickets. The simple fact that we've brought Bresnan in for this test when he hasn't played since June speaks volumes.

England's warm up for the series was non-existent. AGAIN. The Aussies were clever in their scheduling of England's pre-test games. Pudding pitches against sub-standard opposition meaning England hadn't played any serious cricket since The Oval last summer.

When you look at the fact that more than half England's dismissals have resulted from catches down leg side it tells a story of rank bad batting. This should have been recognised by both Flower, and more importantly Gooch, but the way Carberry & Cook got themselves out in the second innings last time out suggests that for some reason the simplest of solutions is beyond the coaching staff. If the ball is heading down the leg side FFS leave it alone!!!

Batting wise we got out of jail last summer mainly down to Bell having the series of his life & the Aussies being utterly crap

Bowling wise Swann & Anderson have been England's go to bowlers in the last few years. Swann was out bowled by Monty in India. Neither Swann nor Anderson (first test aside) looked top level in the home series last time round.

You know what you're going to get when you play in Australia, and for whatever reason, we were totally unprepared for it.

Trying to find your fastest bounciest bowlers doesn't work when they're shite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! None of them are even playing anyway except Broad

Onions must be spending a lot of time with head in hands ocassionally looking up at the south african rain

Woke up at 5 to check the score and seen we had them 140 odd for 5. Got excited that we were on top and was hoping to see them all out for under 250. Got up later to see we've let them off the hook again massively, did we tire in the heat or what?!
