Ok so the local leagues are all finished how did the season go for your club or league?

What did you make of the new set up at both senior and junior levels.

As far as Washington goes I think its been a good start to life in the NEPL, being top with five games to go with a team which in the end only had one new face from the team which played in the last season in the Coast League and turning out a team which had seven players under 22 in the first team.

Interesting to see Durham City find themselves in the second division of the Durham County League next year, when it was there refusal to be relegated from the second tier which precipitated the break up of the old system.

I think the junior set up has worked well with local games and plenty of games for the players via a range of competitions. The only real concern is that 8 players a side at under 11 was to few and I hope it goes to 10 a side next year.

In terms of junior performances, Stockton looked very strong at under 15 with Washington the pick of the under 13 team, not withstanding a superb bowling performance from Prudhoe, and Durham City under 11s were the pick of the under 11s

Thought the NEPL was decent for its first season. Not a massively good standard, but good enough to suggest the league will develop in coming years. I can see the league sorting itself out as promotion/relegation starts to kick in, and ultimately the overall standard will improve. I was pretty impressed with the umpiring too and the spirit amongst the teams seemed good natured whilst remaining competitive.

One thing that really needs sorting though is the points system. Must have been about 4 or 5 games this season when nobody has really had any idea about how many points we actually got.

Not that bothered from a Junior point of view. I think Junior cricket serves its purpose in letting kids have a game of cricket and have fun no matter who they are playing. It's the clubs who identify the good players and get them into senior cricket asap who prosper.

The NEPL points system is fine, it's been in place for years now without problems.

In terms of the Premier Division, a lot of the teams were very evenly matched from 2nd down to 10th. Stockton benefitted hugely from having their Durham players most weeks and were therefore much better than the rest, while the Fell and Shields were cut adrift.

Hetton Lyons won the final few games and jumped from 7th to 3rd, while Chester had a few rained off and fell from 2nd to 6th, such was the competitiveness of the league.

NEPL Prem teams may well understand it, and it may well be fine, but if you look at the actual rules they can be interpreted in many different ways. The wording is extremely ambiguous and on many occasions even the umpires new to the league werent 100% sure

The point system was new to all of the clubs but by the end of the season it was working well. Much better than the set up in the Coast League the year before.

Junior cricket has been great this year. Whitburn have done well at all junior levels with each team winning a cup competition. Eppleton Under 11s had a good season too winning the DCB Bowl Cup and becoming runners up in the NEPL Cup. Yes Stockton have a very good junior section asdo Washington

NEPL umpires have been really good too this season. The games I saw in the Durham Cricket Leauge the umpires are nothing like the ones in the premier Leauge

Interesting with Durham City. Absolutely class at U11/U13 level and pretty much mediocre after that. Does anyone have any idea why this is the case? I'm assuming that as the junior teams are basically all public schoolboy based they all go to University and gets jobs anywhere but the NE and never return.

Saw both the Durham and N'land leagues junior and senior wise this year. Sacriston very strong in the NTSCL at all levels with just about every team and did well in the NEPL. Junior wise the teams that won the leagues were IMHO expected to win them all over the NE. Washington look to have a really good setup. Never picked Whitburn up on my radar junior wise until late on in the season. Defeated Durham City U13s in the DCB end of season tournament so they must have some canny kids.

Stockton clearly excellent this season in the NEPL although they were blessed with up to 3 Durham players, plus Richie Waite so I guess everyone should have expected that. Another late run from South North sees them prosper.[DOUBLEPOST=1380131036][/DOUBLEPOST]

Agreed. Clubs who have policies of just playing their kids at their age group eventually suffer as the better kids go elsewhere in search of more challenging cricket. Those that do get the challenging cricket prosper with the DCB. Seen 11 and 12 year old kids this year at what could be termed lesser clubs playing Academy and Third team cricket. Those kids will be belting players in 2 or 3 years and will play first team cricket at 14 or so.

DCL AGM is coming up and proposed rule changes need to be in by 5 October I think. Two proposals going in from Bill Quay:

(i) No club is permitted to employ a professional unless their facilities are up to a minimum standard (covers, sight screens, working showers etc); and

(ii) The game will last 95 overs regardless of the finishing time; rather than 95 overs or 7.30pm - whatever comes first.

Not my league I know but both sound sensible.

Could be quite controversial enforcing the first one but a good idea none the less. Nothing worse than seeing a club spend thousands on players and you can't even get a decent shower after the game.

The second one sounds reasonable enough although surely you still have to put a time on it, even if its an hour later. You could be there all night at the height of summer.

I played in a Yorkshire League that plays on a 100 over match basis. If your bowling rate are not above a certain rate then the club could be fined or points deducted. Makes a team focus when it gets to a Saturday night I can tell you. Your overs must be bowled in a certain amount of time to avoid the fine as laid down in the rules.

That was the rule in the Coast League but it was never applied

I think the NEPL has point deduction for over rates although i think only 1 deduction was made all season. Saying that I never came across any issues with over rates during the games.

Hylton would like to propose 45 overs per side win or loose or tie. No draw bull shit.

Poor man's cricket imo - takes a lot of the tactics out of the game and allows a team to be successful on the back of a strong batting line up or flat home pitch. We've got the cup games for that kind of bollocks.

I agree. I played in some exciting draws in my time which goes back about 100 years!

Any transfer news and gossip from across the local leagues? A few whispers I've heard include:

Chivers - Esh Winning to Hylton (Harmy - can you confirm?!)

Sample, Hanson, Smailes - Murton to Seaham Park

Meek and Craig - Kimba to Burnmoor

Ian Pattison - Swalwell to Seaham Harbour
