Has Benks left the club?

If he has gone, it's a shame it was like this. No chance for the fans to give him a decent send-off.

Typical of the way things are run at the club at present.
 

Benkenstein was really struggling with the bat towards the end and maybe this is a good time to call it quits. Undoubtedly he has been the number 1 man at Durham since joining and done so much for the club. Be great to honour that in some way but don't think we should be over sentimental in having him clog up a batting spot next season.
 
Looking on twitter it looks like this story has been found by a Durham supporter and he has sent messages to local cricket journos asking them about it, they appear to have been unaware of this but have also been able to contact the club. Stuart Raynor from The Journal has tweeted there is a follow up story in this mornings Journal about it.
Brilliant work from the supporter, either the club where also unaware of Benks new job or they are trying to keep everyone in the dark again. That probably why the quick reply on the Durham website appeared. Be interesting to see if Raynor has any more info on this.
 
Did the story on the Dolphins site appear after he started, or was it just spotted yesterday?
 
Seems to have come to light yesterday.

Durham CCC should know better than to try and hide any info considering how quickly word gets around on the internet these days.
 
Think it will do Onions the world of good him being there. Cracking move to keep him fit in case needed in the Ashes
 
Would be a great shame if he left the club in this manner. Being our highest ever runs scorer plus what we acheived whilst he was here he is surely due a benefit of some sort?

His most important innings for me was the game saving 151 at Headingley in 2006 along with Otis that kept us up, we never looked back from that point.

that's what we said after the end we had to last season and here we are in the box seat for another championship title - despite replacing blackwell, plunkett, claydon & harmison with kids.

benks - absolutel legend in every way don't get me wrong - but he, like di venuto before him, is very much coming to the end of his career and was in poor form with the bat for a long old time. add his age, form, injury troubles and collingwood returning when he did... it just seems the right time for him to call it a day and move onto the next stage of his career - if he wants to
 
Strange one like, although he was pretty much finished as a player.

Benks, DiVa and Lord Otis - all gone now. Inevitable I suppose, but very sad.

aye, funny how it's worked out mind, thank god it has coincided with colly's return adding experience, stokes & borthwick's batting returning to form/progressing, stoneman's improvements and this whole battery of young pace bowlers...

we all feared the worst when the old guard went, but now it looks like rather than go down we're going to be in the top 2 if not winning the division.

you win nowt with kids :p
 
I'm thinking we may not see benks again, at least until such time colly has moved onto bigger things

Probably best for all parties
 
i'm actually liking the sound of the ottis gibson return rumours. maybe im just a sentimental old fool :lol::lol:

all the best to benks, i'd like to see a benefit match for him and a stand named after him, he has helped make this club what it is today, i hope he looks back at his time here with an enormous amount of pride.

i'd certainly always remember our county being represented by him as a player and a captain with a sense of pride
 
If Benks is finished at the club he still has a year left on his contract and will be one of the biggest earners at the club. I don't think he is going to walk away from that so the club will probably have to sort out some sort off pay off for the remainder of his contract. That will still eat into Durhams vastly reduced balance on what they have to spend on salaries for 2014. We probably won't find out until next April when the side is announced for the season opener against Durham uni.

He has a great CV, I'm sure that cash and maybe more will be available to him elsewhere

Iam sure Durham would love to do that, but provincial cricketers or coaches don't get paid 100k a year in South Africa. What ever happens i would imagine they will be plenty of phone calls between Chester le St and Durban over the next few months. All Benks has to do is get himself fit this winter and be back at Durham for pre season training and then it is up to the management team at the club what they do with him. You never know this may be a storm in a tea cup but i doubt it.
 
Thinking about this do we know of anyone who has had their contract paid up early? I'm sure that MDV left by mutual consent, Harmison hung around and got paid so clearly Benkenstein either comes back, mutually agrees not to come back and the contract is cancelled or he finds himself another club in say SA. I doubt he would get it paid up.

I'm told that DCCC really were up financial shit street and that they brought a firm in to sort their financial woes out. This will result, I'm told, in a new Board member joining the club. It'll be interesting too see the reaction of people when they find out who it is! He is very well known but for all the wrong reasons. :confused:

Finally there really has to be some serious questions asked about Harker's part in the financial woes of DCCC. He was the one with responsibility for finance matters. I'm staggered that the bloke is still around.

I walked out of that match thinking 'we're down to Ottis, we've no chance.
