Has Benks left the club?

Benkenstein a former captain for Natal and Sunfoil Dolphins is currently in his last playing season at Durham and will spend his off season with the Sunfoil Dolphins.

To me that reads that he's going to work with the Dolphins from the close of our season and makes no mention of it being permanent, but that's not to say he might enjoy it so much that he decides not to return next April.

What about these quotes though?

Dale Benkenstein commented, “My family and I are loving being back in KZN, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Durham but have missed family, friends and home. There are some challenging times ahead for the Sunfoil Dolphins and South African cricket.

The last one highlighted is clearly past tense.

Bit of a rabbitt off like. Smacks of a falling out with Colly imo.

Knowing he wont be here next year just makes it doubly important to bring in an overseas batsman if finances permit imho.

I agree and I hope the club look to strengthening for next summer. HOWEVER, playing devils advocate, our success this year has perhaps led to the club thinking we don't need to strengthen. Especially if they think it'll save them money!

Otis Gibson has been spotted down the Riverside for the last two home games. Could he be lined up to replace Cook instead of Benks?

I have spoken to Dale a couple of times regarding his circumstance at Durham. As far as I am aware he is coming back next year to honour the last year of his contract. However I do get the distinct impression that any long term plans that anyone thought there were for him at Durham may now be well wide of the mark.

Otis Gibson has indeed been over at Durham, in fact his son was playing cricket with my lad and Neil's lad at Annfield Plain Cricket Club last Sunday at the Academy game. Michael was also at the APCC U15 game v Bishop Auckland game a couple of weeks ago as a spectator. You have now started me thinking as to whether Otis is to take over at DCCC and his son is lined up to play for APCC next season. His son BTW is about 11. Lovely lad.

Mind I've put 2 and 2 together now and probably got about 26! Rumours eh?

Bit of a step backwards for Ottis surely?

I thought he was doing pretty well at his current role

I'd rather the club just promoting young players.

Richardson and Jennings, although both saffers, have great potential and have contributed valuably ad times this season.

Club statement

Durham’s Dale Benkenstein has been appointed as a batting consultant for the South African side the Sunfoil Dolphins for their 2013/2014 season.

Durham Coach Jon Lewis said:

“Benkenstein will spend the English off-season in South Africa, taking on a batting consultant role and continuing his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury which he sustained in May and cut short his season this year with Durham.

“We expect to see him return to the club after his duties with the Dolphins in the summer are completed”.

aye thats what i thought, although i guess there is always the chance of travelling around with WI is not proving to be as enjoyable as living in god's own county. i'm sure we can all appreciate that. especially the weather

To me it just confirms what a lot of people thought on here a few months ago, Benks has been frozen out and probably sees no long term future at the club. That was probably confirmed to him when he offered to assist with coaching the side during the t/20 campaign and was told he was not required after Cooks illness.
With the side doing so well in his absence i would not be surprised if the club come to some agreement with him to pay up part of his contract for next season especially if he and his family are settled back in SA so that he does not have to return.
Also with Cooks incredible return to work after his illness it is clear he is not looking to give it up lightly. Also the way the team have performed and the succesfull introduction of young second team players the other coaches are in a stronger position.

aye, pains me to say but it looks both unlikely and unnecessary for benks to return. for anything other than purely sentimental reasons.

still hope we get a benkenstein stand

Couldnt disagree more, our middle order has looked very fragile at times especially in limited overs cricket.

I appreciate Will Smith & Keaton Jennings & Colly have made contributions at times but for other long periods of the season they have looked lost & scratching around for runs.

I hope 3 CC wins hasnt kidded everyone into thinking we are world beaters, we arent - not with the bat anyway.
