4th Ashes Test - Durham

Bresnan was England's best seamer at Old Trafford, and with his batting he should have been nailed on to play, leaving the way open to drop Broad.

Root stays where he is as he's the long term man to open.

If you're only picking 4 bowlers, then they need to be the four best bowlers. The only argument I ever hear for Bresnan is his batting. I think taking twenty wickets is far more important than the chance of 30 extra runs in the game. We saw last week that if there is no swing and little spin then we don't really have a plan C. That's why a fifth bowler would be more use to us at the minute. In any case, we shouldn't be relying on runs from the number 8 if we get our batting sorted.

Root hasn't looked very confident against the new ball. I'm not one for panic dropping and am happy to see him groomed for the position but I think a gentler introduction to Test cricket would be better for him. Bairstow and Broad really don't deserve to be playing.

England looking for all rounder convo on tms

First name mentioned - Stokes

Only name mentioned but for a cursory word for Rashid

Nothing wrong with building an innings and taking the shine off the ball but dear christ we make it turgid. It also gives the perception that our approach to the game is overly cautious and negative.
Agreed but they're not timing anything here. I haven't seen a middled shot yet.
