New Durham League 3rd Team Rules Farce

In a nutshell, if you've played on a a weekend for the 2nds you can't play on a Thursday in the 3rds. So in affect you need pretty much a uniqiue squad of third teamers! Currently 16 teams in the league. Ill be amazed if that figure stands at the start of the season. Whoever came up with that bright idea will of ended 3rd team cricket at a few clubs who can't take the risk of the draconian fines for not fielding a team. Don't see the point of changing a format that had worked for years in both the Coast League and Senior League. It's not the most competitive standard but it provides an opportunity for those who can't turn out on a weekend and its somewhere for the juniors to cut their teeth in adult cricket. The worst part is no one was even consulted before hand. New league seem like a proper dictatorship.

Neither scenario is perfect but I can see why they've done it. It's equally self-defeating for sides to pretty much field their second team in the third division.

A rule with no more than 4 players who have played on the Saturday would have been a far better rule IMO. I can see why they have done it but like you say no club has infinite players and this could mean promoting youngsters who aren't ready

Sound absolutely crazy. Not many clubs will have 33 players available every week, which they will need. When the holiday season kicks in most teams struggle for 22 on a Saturday.
Durham Cricket League jumped the gun in running it's own Midweek 3rd Team League. It should of been left to the Durham Cricket Board to run where it could of run alongside the Junior system. Geographical location with play-off's at the end of season.
NEPL midweek 3rd Team league fixtures are about to be released. 20 Teams involved. Excellently supported by the clubs and the NEPL. Bring it on!!

I can't see any sense in barring all 2nd teamers from playing in the 3rds. Fair enough putting a limit on them, 3 or 4 seems about right to me.

There are a lot of lads playing 2nd team cricket on a Saturday who don't take a big part in the game and are there just to make the numbers up, it's those lads who need 3rd team games to get a bat or a bowl on a regular basis.

I really think it needs looking at again before it leads to clubs dropping 3rd teams because of lack of interest.

Good post Harry. Agree with much of that. Add in eddyfinn's 4 foreigner rule and I think that's about spot on.

Sorry should say 10 clubs not 20. Still 18 games so play every week in May, June, July & August.

It's going to make it harder for second teams to get lads to fill in when a regular is missing if it means the lad coming in has to give up his 3rd team place for a week.

The problem you fail to see is the BONA FIDE third teamer's help make up the second team when they are short. If they refuse to play for the seconds then the club will be well and truly in the mire. They will break the League rules if the fail to field a team, which will lead to severe fines for persistent offenders.

This will lead to clubs not putting a team into the third team league in case this occurs. There are a lot of clubs struggling for numbers.
