Ha Ha, we (The Fell) stuffed them both home and away but still they somehow managed to tie us for the DSL 2nd XI title. A one off title decider was played at their place, they fielded their first team includin Jimmy Daley and a few other DCCC players at the time, and duely stuffed us out of site.
Hutch I remember that game. You keep going on about it on any thread on here. Jimmy Daley and Dhaun Birbeck played. They played all season in the 2nd Team and rightly so THEY WERE 14 YEARS OLD !!!
Learn to lose gracefully and the victories taste sweeter.

Funny how they didnt play us in the regular season!

Playing for Silky at the time meant we had a good rivalry with them. Funny enough a few of us knew each other well having gone to the same school and played in the same school team.
They had a cracking team then.
Oh and you would sometimes get Jimmy Barnes turn up to "watch" when it was at their place.
I remember at Marsden many years ago that there was a lot of mouthing off going on. It didn't help one day when one of our lads hoyed the ball in for a run out and hit one of their players in the head. Davy Porrit i think it was - remember him - Baldy heed???

I remember me dad declaring at half past six. They had just over an hour to get 170 and it finished scores level. Alan Dick kept hitting it on the front street. I don't remember the locals enjoyed the timing of the declaration!

I bumped into Alan a couple of years ago at Liverpool st station on the way to west ham game. Hadn't seen him for about 20 years. He was living in London at the time. He was part of that ryhope team with the borthwicks etc at the time. They were a good team.

I played at Whitburn at the same time as them, altho I was 2nd and 3rd's rather than 1st. Geordie was captain, but well past his best whereas David was just a class act. Hardly ever wore a helmet, even against some mentally quick west indians who were in the senior league at the time. Liked a beer as I remember. Used to do 3 pints in a minute which was always a crowd pleaser.
Their old man used to be at all the games. Strongest Ryhope accent I've ever heard - it was like he was speaking in a foreign language. Scott used to be at most games too. Even at 3 year old, he was bowling and batting better than most of our U13s

Was a fair bit of needle between Ryhope and Murton back then. Robbed us for the U-18's title one year but we stuffed them in the Cup semi to get some revenge. However we were all mates when we combined forces for the Coast league to crush the Tyneside Senior League at Blaydon. Dickie Ord scored the winning runs to chants of 'Sunderland, Sunderland, Sunderland' from the balcony. Class day that.
There was a lad playing around that time called Hauxwell. A really good player but he seemed to have a real talent for winding everyone up including spectators, opposition, his own team, umpires, etc etc. Probably just mis-understood like most great talents

Ian hauxwell I'd have a guess at?? Runs philli now. Was 1st team captain at Houghton for a few years about 6-7 years ago. Decent bloke is Ian, gets criticised for certain things he has done, but I've always got on well with him, think I seen him play towards the back end of his career, and 90% of the time he couldn't be bothered. But when he could you could tell he was a class act. Used to smash anyone for 6 if he fancied.

Aye that's him. I personally never had a problem with him and, as you mention, he was a good player. it is all a bit vague but I think he was one of the first players I saw wearing a helmet. That could have been a source of agitation for some
He was quite nippy as a bowler as well at junior level.JL mate, I took over as captain when GH was drafted into 1st Battalion, Her Majesty's Foot and Mouth.

Burnhope in the late 80's. The hosts warm up was in the Cartwheel opposite the ground. Some refused to even travel up there. Raucous.

Ian did have a knack of winding people up when he was youngin. There was an air of arrogance about him.
Anyway sort of related to this, was the South Hylton teams in the 80's. They used to have an edginess about them (or at least thought they did). A few members of particular family played for them at the time.
