Nick Compton's probably the best in terms of averages. Hildreth's a good player too. Just don't pick any Durham batsmen.

Root for me at the top of the order like, definitely.

I'd go with that like.

Only 21, so plenty of time ahead of him to develop and he already looks fantastic. Also means that we aren't having to disrupt Trott.

Only problem is, throwing an untried 21 year old in an Indian tour when we all know what the media are like in this country. A couple of bad innings and they will make sure every single shot he plays is highlighted and destroy the lad

Went down too see Durham @ Middlesex earlier this year; the game that Strauss played for them and was out in the first over for a duck.

After the game Strauss was walking down from the Pavilion towards the Grace Gates and the bairn wanted his photo taken with him.

I went outside to have a word with him and realised that I'd forgotten the camera, which I'd left in the Middlesex Members lounge. "No problem" he said, "i'll just wait here while you get it".

It was raining.

True to his word i went and got the camera, came back with it and he stood and had his picture taken with the bairn, asking him which club he played for etc.

Lovely bloke. Hopefully he makes a big success of whatever he moves into next.

Alex Hales, Carberry (sp), Taylor opened for the Lions last year and did very well apparently

cook
Taylor
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Bairstow
Prior

Carberry is no good and is 30+ anyway, Hales or Taylor maybe. I don't watch enough of either of them TBH.

This.

Who;s the new opener gonna be?

Trott?
Root?
carberry?

My fav would be james vince, got a bit of vaughn about him.

Trott I reckon.

You would think the empty slot, should KP come back in of course, would be a straight shootout between Taylor and Bairstow, I also wouldn't rule out Morgan. I can't see anyone else getting blooded until we play NZ.

India away is going to be a lot different to the series over here.

Isn't Nick Compton a Saffa? I'd like us to bring an English lad in.

Thought he could of gone another year at the top, 35 is not a great age in test cricket !

And to give up domestic cricket, could of gone on another 3-4 years at least, still scoring runs for middlesex....

A great england captain, and to retain the ashes says it all....good luck straussy.

Massive respect to the man. Embodies everything that is right about sport.

Absolutely right, a credit to the game.

One of our best opening batsmen of recent times, a good captain and a top bloke, it was never about Andrew Strauss, he was a selfless as they come.

Lots of fond memories of him, I remember the year before he made his England debut he played for Middlesex in a CB40 at the Riverside and after getting out he sat in the members end with who is now his wife and signed mine and all other autograph's with a smile on his face. 7 years later he walked up the steps to the dressing rooms as England captain after an ODI victory against Pakistan, I half-heartedly called him for an autograph, he stopped, walked down a couple of steps, smiled, signed the autograph, smiled again and went back up the steps.

Just small things like that can show you how grounded a bloke is despite their status and he was as good of a role model as any sportsman could have.

He's a player I'll really miss watching. A great player down the years, a great captain and a great servant to his country. History will remember him up there with the greats.

I remember his debut against New Zealand and that amazing century he made in the first innings. His style and ease with the bat was a joy to watch and it was such a shame he missed out on being on the honours board twice when Nasser decided to run him out in the second innings when he was on 86.

The part he's played in beating the Aussies on 3 occasions, concluding with humiliating them on their own patch 2 years ago will not quickly be forgotten.

Good luck in what ever is next for you Straussy, England legend!

few texts say he might run for the Tory party would be some move that?

I couldn't think of a bad word to say about him until that! Great servant to English cricket and seemingly a great bloke who always fronted up to the press. Those that were critical of his captaincy also missed the point, tactically he may have been cautious but captaincy is about forging a team on individuals into a winning unit and he helped a lot of players overachieve by doing that.

His cautiousness could be infuriating at times, particularly at times when you could see we were in a position to hammer the opposition. But it was part of what made him such a good captain and us such a good team, making the games absolutely safe before a declaration was the key to making us tough to beat. A more adventurous captain may have seen some of those drawn games turned into losses.

That reminded me of losing to India when KP was captain. He declared and Sehwag smashed us all over.

His grandad's arguably the greatest English test batsman of all time, so not really. Being born in SA does not make you a Saffer. I mean, Strauss lived in SA till he was 6 year old, does that make him a Saffer too?
