I dont have any kind of snobbery. I simply do not like the limited format of the game and all that goes with it.

I have said many times that if we are to persist with different versions then we should go with test cricket (for purists) and T20 for those who like to see it slapped to all parts and like to hear a few tunes during the game. ODI's I could happily live without. And judging by KP's comments, he agrees. 8-)

Im sure Cook, Strauss and Trott would get into quite a few teams round the world.

Average is usually the best indicator of ability, especially when compared with others. Strauss' of around 42 is not world class, he's a very good player but not world class.

For instance I don't think he'd get into India or South Africa's side.

I always believed that anyone who averages over 40 in test matches was "world class"

Would you put him in the same class as Tendulkar, Dravid, Chanderpaul, Pietersen, De Villiers, Kallis and Sangakkara?

Those are all world class players, I wouldn't say Strauss is of the same calibre as any of those.

Nowt like picking 2 all-time greats to strengthen your arguement. ;-)

I would say he was world class without being quite as good as some of them. Not long ago Pieterson was giving his wicket away and consistently failing against spin. I still think he's world class tho.

I agree with most of that. Its just there's not many openers around that I would choose over him, Inc SA and IND. For that reason I would put his name up there, even though I agree that 50 is the new 40.

Who are these indians and south africans that you would open with over him?

None of them really open though mate. Its an art in its self.

There are still 4 or 5 better openers currently playing, like I say he's a very good player but not in the very top drawer.

Sehwag & Gambhir and Smith & Amla would be my preferences over Strauss.

An openers job is a hell of a lot harder than coming in at 3 (unless theres an early wicket) 4 and 5. There's not many openers out there better than strauss. Cook, sehwag, smith, dilshan and gambhir are the only ones that i can think of that are as good and better

Amla and De Villiers can (and have) open the batting and are both better players than Strauss. Even in your own argument you've named 5 better openers in an age where the quality of test cricket isn't what it once was.

Like I say, he's a very good player. But world class? Not for me.

Gambir- Defo not better. Ave 45 with 9 hundreds,
Sewhag- mmmhm debatable, probaly shades it. Ave is good 50 but 22 hundreds is low for someone of "his" status.

Amla- hhhhm similar. Ave 46 with 14 hundreds.
Smith- Ill give you him. ave 49 with 24 hundreds.

So out of those IMO id only put smith over strauss.

Mate he is comfortably better than strauss, he has 3 triple hundreds man. Best batsman in the world when he gets going

I hear what your saying. Its just If I had to chose between the two to play in a team to save me life, I would go with Strauss every day of the week.

Well the fact that he doesnt get going very often yet still has an average of nearly 51 with 22 hundreds and 32 50s cements the fact that he is better imo. Sehwag can take the game away from you in the space of an hour, strauss cant
