Pakistan v England - 1st Test, Dubai

Did 5 ODI in India when the batsman barely put up a whimper not count as practice in these conditions?

Or is one day cricket and test cricket so vastly different that nothing could possibly be gained

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of our test batsmen didn't play in those hit and giggle games in India did they? Genuine question because I didn't bother watching any of them due to one day cricket being so unutterably shite.

* Broad was injured and didnt tour
** Strauss had retired from one day cricket (on the back of an abysmal 5 off 19 balls in the w/c quarter final against Sri Lanka, when they opened the bowling with Dilshan and he couldnt get the ball of thw quare, result in a charge/heave against the bowler pretty similar to the first innings here)

The question stands what has Flower done to receive all these plaudits when its apparent to most of rational mind that we are still absolutely clueless against a half decent spinner on asian wickets.

He is taking a lot of glory for doing not very much to correct our old failings IMO

Fair enough. I do think the format does play a part in helping batsmen prepare to play on certain types of wickets though. The need to score quickly in limited overs gives the batsmen less time to get used to what the pitch is doing and to read spinners. Hopefully what we'll learn from this test will be to take our time, occupy the crease and not worry about scoring quickly. Take the time to see what the pitch is doing and play the ball not the bowler.

If we can do that next week, we can get the series back on track. The key now is to learn from this experience, not crumble as a result of it.

On a side note, I've just backed England at 25s in case we can somehow fluke this.

They dont have the shot selection against half decent spinners in their own back yard. By occuping the crease as they are incapable of doing much else they get bogged down and get out. Didnt Cook have 2 off 30 balls when he opened in this innings, that is occuping the crease is it not?

You need to be able to rotate the strike and not let a spinner settle

At least we wont have to listen to the Windies captain bemoaning the fact he has to play in England in May this time round when the IPL is being played.

Prior gone.

Batting performance is disgraceful and Flower should consider standing down as coach. Our performances against spin have been piss poor since he took over and he should carry the can.

Pure footballesque knee jerk. We could be 500-3 and you'd find something to pick to discredit the performance. "Dubai isn't like playing in India or Pakistan" or "if Amir hasn't been banned we wouldnt stand a chance".

Praise is rarely given in victory but criticism is given in abundance in defeat.

FWIW, England have batted hideously in this test and the batsmen (as well as Flower and Gooch) should be looking at how we approach spin in the next test.

However, I have been saying for a considerable amount of time during all our success that people needed to chill out and realise the media were portraying the side to be far better than what they actually were.

I also correctly predicted a hard series for England and clearly stated we would be lucky to scrape a drawn series with Pakistan likely to win quite comfortably.

I have also on many occassions bemoaned the meaningless test cricket we force through in May which serves no purpose other than to fill the coffers of the ECB.

I am not being wise after the event

Umar Gul did the damage today to the batting with bog standard seam bowling, not spin. Bad few days at the office by the batsmen.

England will come back strong next week.

Cricket is 90% mental and all the batsman knew the spinners were lurking, the fact Gul got wickets up top doesnt mean much.

I'm not disagreeing with some of your points as they do have merit (particularly May cricket and ECB money raking) but your criticism of the coaching and personnel is far more damning when defeated than it is praising when we are victorious. Without searching previous threads, I'm fairly sure you have reacted in a similar fashion when England have lost games early in a series before going on to comprehensively win.

Saying Andy Flower should consider his position after losing the first test of a series is nonsense and I think you know that

If we get spanked 3-0 in this series, should Flowers position come under threat on the back of the 5-0 whitewash in India in the one dayers.

Would you hold out much hope for us when we go to Sri Lanka and India later this year with Flower in charge?

Why are you talking about 5-0 in one dayers? We are playing tests atm. Did you forget the spanking India got in the series over here. What was the score by the way?

If we get beat 3-0 then Flower should and will reassess how we are approaching cricket in the sub continent. It's not solely down to him either. The ECB will have to look at how we schedule cricket in terms of our players gaining useful sub continent experience. That comes back to your point of cricket in May and IPL.

Unless we go on to lose the next couple of series convincingly and the ODI situation hasn't improved, Andy Flowers position should be considered safe and even if we do lose as above, his position should be reviewed not terminated.

because the same twat who is in charge of us and who is suppose to the best thing since sliced bread is continually failing to do anything about our failings in asia against spin.

Asian sides have never toured well in England. This was suppose to be a new era of english dominance, I say thats bollocks until we get a proper coach
