I hear what you're saying especially if we go with four bowlers then they defo will need a rest now and again in the heat of the middle east. Its just I have no confidence in bops to do us a job. Fatty Patel on the other hand........I know I might get pelters for saying this but he could have done the job of a second spinner/allrounder I reckon.

Agree with this to be honest, if we need a 5th bowler, and we will, surely it would make sense to have Finn playing, put Prior at 6 and Broad at 7. With Swann at 8, you've got batting all the way down to 8, Finn and Anderson aren't exactly rabbits in the headlights with a bat in their hands either.

As has been said, the key is to be able to take 20 wickets, not score 500. Playing 5 recognised bowlers allows one of them to have an off day without having to rely on a part time bowler like Bopara, Trott or Pietersen.

Actually I completely forgot about Patel - there's much more chance of him batting 6/7 and being the 5th bowler than Bopara, given the conditions.

Coetzer made 1 from 10 balls, Broad got 4/49 and some South-African born 'Namibian' scored 98.

It just wouldn't be the same without EB forecasting doom and gloom for English cricket :lol: I agree it will be a close series, entirely based on the fact it's a bit of a white elephant being played on neutral ground.

Statistically he will be without a shadow of doubt. However (as you well know and often post) the bowling attacks of today's test teams are very poor and that is always going to limit his legacy.

Geoffrey is the greatest ever batsmen IMO

Half the normal test team was missing for that, and when it comes to ODIs, when have we ever taken that seriously? Hopefully we never will either.

Next winter it's the proper game and I can confidently say, we won't be whitewashed. Despite our apparent weaknesses on Asian pitches, I think we'll win that series and we have a good chance this one.

The windies and Australia were good at both formats, its unlikely a side would be revered in test cricket and pretty hopeless in ODI, just doesnt work like that.

Many often cite Englands strength in depth so players missing is a mute point.

Where many up and coming players go to Australia or NZ perhaps for us to dominate some need to start going to Asia during our winter so the next crop dont fall into the same failings as many do at the minute.

The way we chopped and changed the team in India wasn't using our strength in depth, it was giving as many players big match experience when the result wasn't important. Big changes to a side doesn't work, just look Australia at the moment, less consistent than we were in the 90s.

If you look at our current test squad, we've got 5 pace bowlers for 3 (or at a push, 4) slots. 2 spinners when we need them. A settled group of players for the top 6/7, although with the likes of Bopara still in contention, there is an argument that we need to find a few more batsmen capable of slotting in when needed, because when we bat down to 7, that's all of our current 'first choice' batsmen in the team.

I think you may have a point about trying to send some of our players to Asia to get some experience of the wickets over there. Dare I say it, the IPL may be a good starting point for that, although the Sri Lanka tour may get in the way of that this year.

I hear what you're saying. Batting so far has looked a bit iffy, with only strauss and cook looking like they might be ok. However its a long tour so hopefully the middle order will adapt to the slow conditions. On a plus note the bowlers look alright. So you never know we might scrape the series win. Pakistan will be a formidible opposition, but I reckon we have the tools to at least give them a test on their "home" patch.

We beat the ICC team by 3 wickets, and Tim Bresnen has been ruled out for the whole test series, which is a shame as I thought he would do alright. It heaps a lot of pressure an Stuart Broad now as he will be our number 7, hope he can withstand it.

Why would England suddenly change ploy and deploy 5 man attack, makes no logical sense? Broad will be at 8 along with Swann, Finn and Jimmy.

Broad at 7 as a bowling all-rounder with Panesar as second spinner? If they weren't already thinking about it, then the injury to Bres has given them the perfect excuse to go for it. Finn for Bresnan was a straight swap, but Finn isn't anywhere near as competant with the bat as Bresnan. These Tests' will be won by a teams ability to take 20 wickets IMO, so playing an additional bowler and pushing Broad up to 7 (he has a Test century y'knar) wouldn't be a bad idea in theory.

Good post, not a bad shout that like.

Broad has confidence in his batting. He's scored more runs in the warm up match than some of the proper batters. I normally dont rate the lad, but if he can nail down the 7 spot as his own then kudos to him. A second spinner is a must for me like on these pitchs. Pakistan I guarentee will use two, ajmal and rehman with hafeez as their 3rd. Why are we only gonna play with one frontline spinner?
