England v India - 1st Test, Lords

Awesome day's play.

If we are going to win the series I think we have to win this Test from here. India are notoriously slow starters to series generally as well as being undercooked this time around.

Five wickets for Swann on day 5?

big test of how much strauss wants the no.1 spot.

my fear is he will have us bat for too long, again.

Aye - I remember KP declaring and giving them 387 and they knocked them off easily. England will probably be overly cautious but its understandable.

tbf that was on the dead tracks of india and with sehwag scoring at an alarming rate (he through the bat at everything!)

.....thought we gave them more than to get mind.

If we're prepared to have a go today, we can aim at a lead of 400-450 by team time and have 4 sessions to bowl them out, a target of 450 would dangle enough of a carrot for them to have a go.

The key is that the likes of Cook and Trott don't focus on personal goals again, but get on with it and try to score quick runs.

I think Strauss will take away any chance of them winning the game before attacking and trying to get the win. He's that type of captain, as long as we don't get beat and then work from there. I see where you're coming from though and I'm leaning towards your point of view.

With this Indian batting line up you don't want to dangle any sort of carrot in front of them. As long as we can score quickly enough I don't see any reason not to get to a 480-500 run lead and declare from there.

We should be able to score 300 today; and should be looking to do so in around 70-75 overs.

It's worth giving them a 5% chance if it increases our chances by 15%. 450 absolute max, hopefully they are positive from about an hour in.

I don't have a problem with Strauss making the game absolutely safe before we declare, if that means setting them 500 then so be it. The real key point is that we score the runs quickly so that we can at least look to declare today because IMHO we'll need at least 3 sessions to bowl them out.
