I don't have a problem with Strauss making the game absolutely safe before we declare, if that means setting them 500 then so be it. The real key point is that we score the runs quickly so that we can at least look to declare today because IMHO we'll need at least 3 sessions to bowl them out.

Bat normally first two sessions, score a hundred in each to get a lead of 380-400 at tea. Throw the bat for an hour afterwards, 1 1/2 hours tonight to have a bash at them.

Unless we get skittled obviously

Sounds about right, and looks like Strauss is in agreement, bit of a statement of intent from him there. I'd love to see him get 100 today.

Na mate you're being too cautious there. Chances to get the 20 wickets in this series are going to be limited so when we get a sniff we have to go for it. Remember they have no Sehwag and they bottled chasing 85 in 20 overs or so a few weeks ago...

With this Indian batting line up you don't want to dangle any sort of carrot in front of them. As long as we can score quickly enough I don't see any reason not to get to a 480-500 run lead and declare from there.

We should be able to score 300 today; and should be looking to do so in around 70-75 overs.

far too many runs that. this is the best chance we have of beating them. good 1st innings lead and india a bowler down. we need to get away from this cautious approach. if strauss bats that long then he isnt putting much confidence in his bowlers. if cant get a win at home with a lead of 420 then we simply arent good enough.

I wouldn't say it was a joy but his defensive technique remains superb
