To be fair boycs would have expected Randal to set off which would have impeded the bowler . It was only Randal standing that let him get accross to the on side

It was unfortunate and boycs was upset about it but he was following the ball to the danger end and in those days bowlers didnt field like atheletes like they do now .So you hit the ball back to the bowler - ball hardly going off the cut strip - and set off for a run ?
You wouldn't do it in a T20 game let alone a 5 day Test Match ......clearly it was Boycotts fault and he knew it by his demeanour afterwards.
That just about says it all. Boycott is actually home at the danger end almost before the ball is fielded. Does anybody know which ball of the over it was?It was unfortunate and boycs was upset about it but he was following the ball to the danger end and in those days bowlers didnt field like atheletes like they do now .
if Randal had run there would have been no problem, he's only two yards out in the finish from a standing start , and wasn't he supposed to be lightning ?
look at it again , the bowler is yards from the ball when boycs sets off , it was his call and I presume he called . Geoff was renoun for running to get off strike early doors for a look and Randal was wool gathering slightly , as he was inclined to do .
Unfortunate but technically doable , the only thing Geoff didn't do was turn back when Randal froze, but Geoff would never do that , he was far too important .
Thanks for that. That just about says it all. Boycott is actually home at the danger end almost before the ball is fielded. Does anybody know which ball of the over it was?
Botham on the other hand deliberately and premeditatedly ran out Boycott on another occasion.
Just wondered if Geoffrey was trying to nick the strike. People seem to forget that run outs happen, even at Test level. SIR Ian Botham did it on purpose. Thanks for that.
Don't know what ball it was but I do know that people conveniently forget that Geoff went on to make a ton in that innings . He put on 80 in the second , 31 with Randall who made a second innings hundred and the game was won .
The only thing that is picked out is that Randall got run out . He was on 13 by the way so he wasn't cold .
The score was 52 -2 , Randal had 13 of them , Geoff wasn't "in" enough to be wanting the strike .Just wondered if Geoffrey was trying to nick the strike. People seem to forget that run outs happen, even at Test level. SIR Ian Botham did it on purpose.
He wouldn't have faced him at all, as he stopped playing for England before the infamous 74/5 tour. England, or MCC as they were then, called up Colin Cowdrey as I recall. The score was 52 -2 , Randal had 13 of them , Geoff wasn't "in" enough to be wanting the strike .
It was his first innings back in test cricket too apparently so how much he had faced Thompson I don't know , as I said Geoff liked a good look from the far end
He didn't even play at Ashbrooke in the Minor Counties match.
Maybe because he's an obnoxious old goat?
Great cricketer like, first in as opener on my team sheet.
quality on tms, always worth a listen
when he starts saying his mother could've hit that with a stick of rhubarb! you know he's on top form389 times past 50 or more in 606 first class games.
A quality player passes 50 one innings in nearly four.
Geoffrey probably neared 1 in three.
same on the C5 Highlights package.
"My mother would have hit that for four"
"Your board did not want DRS, so yer out sonny"
when he starts saying his mother could've hit that with a stick of rhubarb! you know he's on top form
you just have to pray no one scores a run down to third manThat's lollipop bowling is that.

however good geoffrey is in equal measure swann is bad,his impression of bumble is painful! No third man , easy runs once again. I cannot believe they don't have a third man- it's criminal.
